Fountain Valley School, a selective and diverse boarding school, educates 250 students in grades 9–12 on a beautiful 1,100-acre campus in Colorado Springs, CO. Founded in 1930, the school provides a rigorous, global curriculum in academics, arts, athletics, and the outdoors.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director of Facilities is responsible for the care and maintenance of our school's physical plant. The Director of Facilities should have an extensive background in custodial care, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and related infrastructure consistent with a boarding school. A successful candidate is someone who creates a culture of collaboration between departments in a way that supports our staff. This is a twelve-month position responsible for leading and managing the maintenance, repair, and improvement of our facilities, including the maintenance, grounds, and custodial departments.
Supervisory Functions:
- Supervisory responsibility over custodial, maintenance and grounds personnel and their projects.
- Oversees weekly meetings with maintenance, custodial, and grounds staff.
- Assist in the recruitment, interviewing, and selection of operations personnel.
- Suggest improvements to COO related to policies and procedures in Operations.
- Routinely inspect and tour all campus facilities for maintenance and custodial needs.
- Coordinates and collaborates with the lead custodian and custodial staff.
- Processes support requests, determines which jobs will be performed by internal staff and which must be performed by outside contractors, and advises the Chief Operating Officer.
- Creates and maintains a plan for snow removal, including an equitable schedule for everyone in the departments.
- Works with the Chief Operating Officer to create an appropriate schedule for all facilities staff.
- Maintains department schedules to ensure adequate staffing.
- Maintains a clear focus on implementing the vision and mission of the school related to all physical plant assets (including Mountain Campus).
- Reviews completion times of work orders with staff to efficiently manage the overall process in the CMMS ticketing system.
- Establishes and maintains a positive and productive working environment.
- Supervises the work of outside maintenance and custodial contractors to ensure compliance with contractual agreements, municipal codes, and safety standards.
- Must be present at after-hours events to coordinate activities, including but not limited to Back-to-School, Graduation, Reunion, and various Board of Trustee events, as determined by the Chief Operating Officer.
Building Oversight:
- Work with the COO to develop priority lists for building maintenance and prepare cost estimates.
- Serve as Maintenance on Call as part of a rotating schedule and take a leadership role when responding to emergencies.
- Leverage our CMMS system to ensure operational excellence, including planning, monitoring, reporting maintenance tasks, tracking work orders, scheduling maintenance, tracking assets, creating and managing work orders, and implementing preventive maintenance plans.
- Conduct routine and periodic inspections of facilities and grounds with the Chief Operating Officer.
- Maintain supplies and equipment and make recommendations for necessary purchases.
- Oversee inventory control for all general supplies and equipment needed for repairs and grounds, collaborating with custodial inventory.
- Assess all plumbing, HVAC, and electrical problems, determine the root cause, and develop a plan of action to correct the problem.
- Respond appropriately to resident or community emergencies by assisting as needed.
- Schedule, implement, and manage a preventive maintenance program for production machinery and equipment in conjunction with the Chief Operating Officer.
- Ensure uninterrupted services (including but not limited to electrical, refrigeration, water, steam, and compressed gas).
- Assist the Chief Operating Officer and Risk Management personnel in compliance with local, state, and federal building codes, SDS, OSHA, EPA regulations, and fire codes.
- Assume primary responsibility for the safe condition of flooring, door frames, doors, window glass and frames, toilet partitions, staircases, stair treads, wall surfaces, ceilings, hardware, and similar structural elements in the facilities.
General Duties:
- Protects, maintains, and enhances the facilities and related assets of Fountain Valley School in a safe and efficient manner, including buildings, grounds, furniture, fixtures, fire safety and security equipment, maintenance equipment, and supplies.
- Safeguards related plans, documents, and files.
- Stays abreast of the changing needs of all school-year programming as well as summer programs and responds promptly to any facilities needs and operating services.
- Solicits bids for, evaluates, and recommends outside contractors as appropriate or necessary to perform certain facility/maintenance tasks, and monitors and manages their performance.
- Actively works to identify and implement energy-saving measures with the support of the COO.
- Ensures that all health and safety requirements are met for all equipment used by campus food services.
- Schedules and manages routine maintenance on all building systems.
- Responds to a wide variety of inquiries from staff, district personnel, other community agencies, etc., for the purpose of resolving problems, providing information, and/or referring to appropriate personnel.
- Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the campus.
- Effectively uses computers, PDAs, and phones, including the use of spreadsheets, databases, and inventory management software.
- Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position.

- Bachelor’s degree required or job-related experience with a minimum of ten years of full-time professional experience in facilities.
- At least three years of supervisory experience involving public organization facilities maintenance, operations, and/or construction.
- Experience in overseeing an asbestos management plan.
- Working knowledge of local, state, and federal laws related to the operations and maintenance of school facilities.
- Possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License.
- Experience with cost estimation of remodeling and facilities improvement projects.
- Experience designing and implementing preventative maintenance programs.
- Knowledge of building management systems, including HVAC and fire alarm controls.
Working Conditions:
- Environment: indoor/outdoor, all weather conditions.
- Physical demands: Able to sit, stand and frequently lift equipment and materials weighing 100 pounds or more, crawl, climb ladders, twist, turn and reach in completing a variety of job duties. Position is 40+ hours per week working in all weather conditions.
