Job Description Summary
For over fifty years, the Medical University of South Carolina Foundation (“Foundation”) has helped donors with their philanthropic support of MUSC. The Foundation now has over $800 million in assets that exclusively benefit the Medical University of South Carolina and MUSC Health in their mission to educate future medical professionals, research new ways to advance healthcare, and to care for patients.
The Foundation has four primary activities:
- Gifts – raise charitable gifts, accept donations, perform fund accounting and reporting functions, process distributions to MUSC beneficiaries. The Foundation received $55 million in contributions and distributed $48 million in support to MUSC during FY 2025.
- Investments – manage over $725 million in long term and short term investments.
- Real Estate – own $50 million of property for the benefit of MUSC.
- Other MUSC Support – provide strategic advice and other support to MUSC, like the management of MUSC’s internal venture capital program – 1824 Health Ventures.
The Foundation’s finance and accounting team is currently comprised of seven professionals and is responsible for general ledger accounting, fund administration, accounts payable, treasury management, and financial reporting. The Chief Financial Officer (“CFO”) leads this team and collaborates closely with the Chief Operating Officer (“COO”) and the gift operations team.
The CFO is a key member of the Foundation’s executive leadership team.

Job Description
Foundation Leadership
- Work with CEO, VP of Institutional Advancement, and COO to define and execute the Foundation’s strategic plan.
- Work with the Foundation’s MUSC partners – President’s Office, business managers, and other MUSC leaders – to ensure quality service and innovate the Foundation’s processes.
- Board Responsibilities
- Board Treasurer
- Manage and support the Finance and Audit Committees.
- Coordinate with CEO and board committee chairs.
- Prepare and present materials.
- Prepare the annual budget and manage the annual budget process.
- Direct reports: Controller, Funds Manager.
Accounting
- Support the Controller in their responsibilities.
- Establish, oversee, and update processes and controls.
- Design and develop new reports/dashboards for Foundation and MUSC leadership.
Fund Administration
- Support Funds Manager in their responsibilities.
- Setting up new funds.
- Oversight and review of fund activity.
- Calculating annual endowment payouts.
- Monitoring for stranded assets.
- Customer service.
- Primary liaison with audit and tax firm.
- Review annual engagement letters.
- Manage RFP process.
- Coordinate with auditor and tax team.
- Support the Controller in their management of the audit process and tax filings.
- Preparation of audit documents and schedules.
- Form 990.
Treasury Management
- Cash flow management and forecasting.
- Bank and broker relationship management.
- Money movement and security transfers.
Revenue Management
- Management fees.
- Rent income.
Debt Management
- Arrange and negotiate financing.
- Manage debt service, debt covenant compliance.
Additional Job Description
Education: Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent Work Experience: 11 years progressive work experience and 7 years management experience.
