Job Description Summary
The Director of Security will be responsible for providing a wide range of security services to an assigned facility.
The incumbent will be responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating all aspects of security services and operations to provide safety and security to all Memorial Hermann properties, staff, visitors, and patients. This position will have direct reports and supervision responsibilities of security staff including contract security officers. The Director, Security reports to the Regional Director of Security.
Assigned Hospital campus will be in excess of 1,500,000 square feet and more than 35 security personnel (As approved by the Sr. VP, Chief Facilities Officer, the level may be adjusted to ensure appropriate management leadership based on several factors, which includes but is not limited to: number and size of facilities, total number of FTEs, additional hospital and/or system responsibilities).
Principal Accountabilities
- Directs, supervises, and evaluates work of reporting staff. Hires and develops new employees and conducts performance evaluations.
- Motivates and coaches staff to achieve department and company goals. Understands, interprets, and enforces new and/or updated local, state, and federal security regulations, maintaining positive working relations with all outside agencies including local/state police.
- Oversees the daily activities of the department; develops and implements short- and long-term plans designed to achieve divisional goals.
- Implements and evaluates divisional goals and action plans to support the company’s vision, philosophy, and strategic plan. Prepares and submits an annual list of divisional objectives and develops benchmarks to monitor progress in support of the overall mission of Security.
- In collaboration with key stakeholders, develops and applies security strategies consistent with the identification of current security risks and threats and in line with regulatory and budgetary requirements.
- Collaborates with Senior Administration in the development and implementation of security and safety policies and procedures; develops and implements contingency plans and represents the department by actively participating on committees and in the community.
- Ensures compliance with security standards and regulatory/accreditation agencies.
- Directs the security management plan at assigned facilities, as required by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals Organization. Applies continuous quality improvement principles to security operations.
- Provides expertise in health care security to support a safe, secure environment for patients, visitors, and staff. Performs security evaluations as required in facility and region. Collaborates with system peers to develop and implement policies related to security.
- Assures that revenue, expenses, contribution margin, and FTEs meet or exceed budget. Prepares and submits budget and related reports. Forecasts and accurately projects expenses. Takes corrective action to address negative variances. Identifies and proposes capital budget items.
- Provides personal protection to VIPs and Memorial Hermann senior leadership.
- Ensures safe care to patients, staff, and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity, and quality of service.
- Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor, and resource to less experienced staff.

Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice, Management, or related field required.
Licenses/Certifications:
- Certified as a Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator by the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (if not certified upon date of hire) must obtain certification no more than six (6) months after becoming eligible for certification.
- Must be licensed as a Commissioned Security Officer by the Texas Department of Public Safety Private Security Bureau (if not licensed upon date of hire); must obtain license no more than six (6) months after hire.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license upon hire (if from out of state), can obtain a Texas Driver’s license within 90 days of employment.
- Based on business need, may be required to meet the Security Services requirements to carry a firearm.
Experience/Knowledge/Skills:
- Age Requirement: Must be at least 21 years of age.
- At least three (3) years management experience in security or law enforcement, preferably in a healthcare or corporate environment.
- Knowledge of Texas Penal Code, security reports and investigations, and JC security standards.
- Must be able to understand the English language and communicate it effectively in both verbal and written form.
Proficiency with common computer software (Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel) is required.
