Surgical Pathology Laboratory Lead Manager
Position Summary
This position reports to the Senior Academic Administrator for Anatomic Pathology and is technically supervised by the Vice-Chair of Anatomic Pathology. This position interacts with Stony Brook University Hospital leadership and external regulatory agencies.
Duties of the Surgical Pathology Lead Manager
- Partner with the Senior Administrator and the Vice Chair for Anatomic Pathology to recruit histology laboratory staff and Pathology Assistants.
- Conduct annual staff evaluations and oversee laboratory staff scheduling to ensure optimal diagnostic services, in compliance with University Hospital Policies and Procedures. Oversee technical staff and work-flow. Ensure participation in national technical staff competency programs, as mandated by the NY State Department of Health, CLEP, CAP and JCAHO standards. Maintain updated procedure manuals based on regulatory agency standards and University Hospital policies. Participate in corrective actions as directed by SBUH policies.
- Ensure the security of the supply chain for equipment and supplies.
- Meet the needs of changing or emerging services in Surgical Pathology. Oversee immunohistochemistry procedures and deploy solutions to process tissues for electron microscopy.
- Interface with the Anatomic Pathology LIS Coordinator and ensure efficient workflow through LIS training of technical staff.
- Support the Vice Chair for Quality Improvement for data collection for the AP QA and QI programs.
- Train technical staff, medical students, and residents to process surgical pathology specimens. Develop and participate in continuing education and in-service education.
- Participate in Corporate Compliance Plan.
- Ensure that policies, standards, and environmental monitors are in compliance with requirements of the SBU Office of Health and Safety. Communicate results of environmental safety monitors to laboratory staff, the Directors of Surgical Pathology and the Residency Program, and to the Senior Departmental Administrator for Anatomic Pathology.
- Address Facilities and Housekeeping issues.
Qualifications
Required:
- BS Degree in Medical Technology or one of the biological sciences is required. In lieu of a BS degree in Medical Technology or a biological science, an additional 8 years of experience is required.
- Certification as a NY State Education Department Clinical Laboratory Technologist.
- At least 6 years of work experience working in a Surgical Pathology/Histology Laboratory.
- Experience in utilization of a Laboratory Information System to optimize Histology Laboratory operations.
- Experience in data generation and analysis for Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement.
- Experience with laboratory bar coding and tracking programs.
Preferred:
- Masters Degree.
- Experience in a teaching hospital laboratory environment.
- 2 years supervisory experience in the specialty area of Histology.

Anticipated Pay Range:
The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $114624 - $145370 / year.
The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBUH’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
In addition, all UUP positions have an additional $3400 for location.
