PenFed is hiring a (Hybrid) Engineer III, IT – M365 Messaging/Active Directory at our Tysons, Virginia location. The primary purpose of this job is to lead engineering specific activities on enterprise service delivery systems, services and applications. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, system design; standards based implementation, capacity planning, systems integration, process / procedure development and refinement, and technical support.

- Manage the enterprise Hybrid Exchange, Active Directory and Microsoft 365 environments including Exchange, Azure AD sync, Active Directory Group Policy, installs, upgrades, configurations, maintenance and support.
- Review, update, install, and train others on the features and best practices of Microsoft 365 messaging, creating a secure, sustainable, and highly automated environment that meets requirements across all on-prem and cloud-based footprints.
- Provide technical knowledge in the planning, configuring, deployment, and management of Microsoft Exchange Online and Active Directory / Azure AD.
- Collaborate to provide system design proposals, analysis, cost analysis and hardening designs (including data security) of systems and servers in the messaging stack including installations, upgrades, patches, as well as documentation with primary responsibility for the implementation, management, support, and maintenance of various systems within the messaging environment.
- Quickly troubleshoot, analyze, and resolve Active Directory and Exchange related issues.
- Plan and direct upgrades of Windows Server, Microsoft Exchange, and Azure/M365 infrastructure and related components.
- Recommend solutions and lead the implementation of systems in a phased approach of requirements analysis, system design review, build, integration, and testing.
- Serve as a Technical Lead and provide Subject Matter Expertise for project/task planning, estimation, scheduling, and staffing.
- Accountable for providing escalation support to troubleshoot, maintain systems and resolve issues and outages.
- Develop and maintain proper documentation including configuration specifics and procedures, for implementation and ongoing operation/maintenance of solutions.
- Perform routine operational tasks, verifying the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of all hardware, resources, systems, and key processes.
- Responsible for stability, integrity and efficiency of the systems that support core functions of the business.
- Review system and application logs and verify completion of scheduled jobs.
- Serve as a key team member using existing technical knowledge and have the skills to perform complex projects independently.
- Interact with senior engineers, management, vendors and other stakeholders to identify areas of improvement for operational efficiency.
- Accountable for ensuring delivery of all assigned tasks and projects.
- Lead the planning and design of an enterprise Business Continuity Plan and Disaster Recovery Plan.
- Advocate for compliance with Security, Incident Management and Change Management procedures and reporting practices.
- Maintain up-to-date detailed knowledge of the IT industry as it relates to the technologies and processes in your domain, relevant organizational knowledge, and project management practices.
- Recommend new and emerging technologies.
- Develop and maintain secure configuration and operations of in-place systems according to industry best practices.
- Lead design discussions and ensure that designs are aligned with the PenFed Secure by Design philosophy, the PenFed architecture, and the current roadmap.
- Provide advice, guidance, and assistance to junior engineers in order to develop staff capabilities.
- Participate in on-call 24X7 support as needed in the event of system outage or failure.
Qualifications
Equivalent combination of education and experience is considered.
- Bachelor’s Degree in related field.
- In lieu of a degree, a combination of education and a minimum of ten (10) years of related work experience is required that provides the necessary skills and knowledge to perform all the essential job functions.
- Deep understanding of Microsoft Exchange 2016 & 2019 structures to include: database structure; mail routing and related protocols.
- Advanced experience designing and implementing corporate messaging, Active Directory environments, and configuration and optimization of MS Exchange and Active Directory.
- Experience in O365 messaging and exchange, including mail flow/delivery, SMTP, messaging security, email retention and discovery.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Exchange and its interaction with Active Directory / Azure AD.
- Large enterprise/corporate experience for 2000 plus mailboxes is required.
- Advanced experience with script development (PowerShell/Python preferred).
- Architectural understanding of M365 security constructs and data protections such as DLP, RMS/IRM, Azure Information Protection.
- Experience with Microsoft Active Directory and Azure Active Directory design and implementation options.
- Experience with Group Policy Management.
- Experience working with Mobile device management solutions including Microsoft Intune.
- Good working knowledge of Security/Compliance best practices.
- M365 Power Platform experience is a plus.
- Knowledge and experience with M365 collaboration tools such as SharePoint Online, OneDrive and Teams is a plus.
- Knowledge and experience with ProofPoint email security solutions is a plus.
- AWS Experience is a plus.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills - ability to communicate effectively with all levels of audience.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with team members.
- Effective time management, independent problem solving and multi-tasking skills.
- Must be able to present system designs for user approval at formal reviews.
- Strong problem solving and analytic skills.
- Experience mentoring and developing junior team members.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to an indoor office setting with moderate noise.
*Most roles require working in an office setting with moderate noise and the ability to lift 25 pounds.*
Travel
Ability to travel to various worksites and be on-call is required.
