Job Summary
Applies project management skills and methods to a variety of substantive assignments in compliance with all applicable state and federal codes and regulations. Exercises judgment on issues of moderate scope and complexity. Selects methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria within established guidelines.
Provide support to the Architectural Division by implementing the design and construction process for each Capital and Facilities project assigned. The incumbent will serve as UCSF design professional, work with consultants and contractors, prepare documentation and gain agency approval that conforms to project scope, budget, and schedule, and monitor construction from inception of the project to closeout.
Existing conditions must be addressed to bring spaces into compliance with current regulations. Negotiate a professional service contract and coordinate a team of professionals to develop the scope, schedule, and budget for a project. Present and explain project information to obtain review and approval of key constituents to reflect agreement with the project scope. Assemble construction documents based on project scope. Provide project approval with local jurisdictions having authority. Suggest methods to increase value, maintain cost, or reduce cost of the project. Analyze building for needed infrastructure; collaborate with other jurisdictions, institutions, or contractors to prepare the project area for construction. Meet with reviewing agency to analyze potential code conflicts; obtain agreement on controversial issues.
Evaluate plans and specifications for completeness, accuracy, and conformance with project goals and objectives. Work with contracting staff, legal counsel, and stakeholders to ensure all contract documents are established to allow the project to proceed. Obtain Reviewing Agency approval for the project.
Monitor construction and inform project stakeholders on progress, quality, scope, schedule, and budget. Identify variances and discuss solutions with Supervisor, Project Team Manager, Customers, Facilities Project Coordinators, and other project stakeholders. Manage unanticipated events that delay construction and solve problems. Evaluate the need for and coordinate project change orders and contract amendments. Review and approve consultant’s progress payments. Collaborate with internal stakeholders on equipment and materials, finish of interiors, and final approval for occupancy.
Support an environment and mechanism to stimulate healthy competition, share ideas, and promote opportunities to learn new techniques and methods that will improve the department's products and services. Collaborate with others to review, revise, and develop Design & Construction policies, procedures, methodologies, and tools as required. Collaborate on project status reports to meet project costs and timeliness objectives and maintain the current and future standard in design and documentation.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
The salary range for this position is $67,000 - $143,800 (Annual Rate).

Department Description
The UCSF Health, Department of Planning Design & Construction is responsible for providing comprehensive capital project delivery services to the inpatient, ambulatory, and hospital administrative units on the Parnassus, Mt Zion, Mission Bay and satellite campuses in San Francisco and throughout the greater Bay Area. Project types include infrastructure & technology upgrades, renovations and upgrades of diagnostic, imaging and treatment facilities, full floor renovations of inpatient units, and remodels of clinical, administrative, and outpatient facilities. The Health Capital Project Management group is responsible and accountable to assure projects are delivered on time and within budget, that the design solutions are appropriate, that public contracting laws and codes are respected, safety of patients and staff is maintained, and that all furnishings, equipment, IT support is in place and active when the project is delivered. All of this must be done with a minimum of disruption to the clinical activities. The current program is $400M and consists of more than 100 projects.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Working knowledge of hospital design and construction project processes and strong organizational skills to manage vital project components.
- Knowledge and understanding of basic building code and regulatory requirements including Title 22 and OSHPD.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to create clear, concise, professional reports.
- Skilled in managing vendor relationships, coordinating with contractors, property managers and / or project stakeholders.
- Demonstrated experience building, maintaining, and nurturing strong professional relationships.
- Demonstrated Microsoft Office Suite skills and AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction or similar.
- License to practice in at least one of the following professions: architecture, engineering, urban design, city planning or landscape architecture.
- Construction or Project Management or related field.
- Understanding and knowledge of relevant industry practices. Ability to accurately proof contracts, leases, floor plans, and research technical records.
- Demonstrated ability to monitor project budgets, evaluate vendor estimates, and review payment requests.
