Dentist, Attending Orthodontist (El Cajon and Chula Vista) - Per Diem

Position Summary:
Diagnoses and treats diseases, injuries, and malformations of teeth and gums, and related oral structures. Examines patient to determine nature of condition utilizing dental radiographs, dental instruments, and other diagnostic procedures. Supervise and mentor pediatric dental residents and their delivery of dental and orthodontic care to patients.
The patient population make-up for the Pediatric Dentist will consist primarily of healthy children 0 to 14 years of age and special needs children 0-21 years of age.
Essential Functions of the Job:
- Coordinates the preparation of reports and written documentation as required by the department, company, state, and federal agencies.
- Consults with the patients and advises them of their dental status, prescribes the treatment required, provides benefits, risks, alternatives, and documents according to department, company, state, and federal agency guidelines.
- Mainly oversees the orthodontic care provided to patients by residents. Responsible for evaluating overall dental health as well as providing orthodontic services.
- Treats soft hard tissue diseases of the oral cavity; prescribes surgery on oral tissues when necessary; renders prosthetic treatment when approved and indicated; designs and places orthodontic devices to correct malocclusion of teeth and renders any dental services to restore the oral health of the patient.
- Provides preventive dental services to patients, such as applications of fluoride and sealants to teeth, and provides education in oral health and dental hygiene.
- Provides direct and indirect supervision of pediatric dental residents in their delivery of dental and orthodontic care.
- Maintains current knowledge base of pediatric dental and orthodontic literature and provides guidance to pediatric dental residents in a manner that reflects this.
- Provides lectures and or seminars on specific assigned topics.
- Gives and receives regular evaluations of and from pediatric dental residents.
- Maintains current California Dental License, DEA Certificate (if applicable), and BLS.
- Provide dental services and or supervise residents at any San Ysidro Health dental clinic as requested.
- Complete administrative duties as assigned by the Dental Director.
- Communicates with Rady Children’s Hospital physicians and staff and helps pediatric dental residents to facilitate dental and orthodontic care for patients.
- Closely supervises and approves treatment notes generated by residents.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
- Complies with established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
- Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.
- Attends meetings as required and participates in committees as directed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
Job Requirements
Experience Required:
- 2 years of related experience preferred.
- Dental assistant supervision is preferred.
Education Required:
- DDS Degree and completion of a US-accredited Orthodontic Residency Program.
Certifications Required:
- Licensed to practice dentistry in the State of California.
- Orthodontic Residency Program Certificate.
- DEA License (if applicable).
- CPR certificate.
- Board Certification is preferred.
Verbal and Written Skills Required to Perform the Job:
- Good oral and written communication.
- Good communication skills with the public and other employees.
- Patience and understanding toward others.
Technical Knowledge and Skills Required to Perform the Job:
- Computer skills involving word processing, email and dental management programs such as Dentrix are preferable.
Equipment Used:
- Dental operatory equipment, laboratory, sterilization equipment, and front office equipment.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
- May be required to work some evenings and/or Saturdays.
- Mostly sitting position while bending forward to treat patients.
Universal Requirements:
Pre-employment requirements include I-9, physical, positive background and reference check results, complete application, new hire orientation, pre-employment PPDs. Compliance with all mandated vaccinations and all boosters is a term and condition of employment.
