ABOUT THE POSITION:
The BESS Senior Service Engineer (SSE) under general direction of the ASM (Area Service Manager), and working with FSTs (Field Service Technicians) and FSEs (Field Service Engineers) performs all aspects of service operations, maintenance and support for Battery Energy Storage Systems in a designated geographical area within the Fluence Regional Services department. The Senior Service Engineer will assist the FST/FSE/ASM with site reports, and other written and verbal communications between the site and the Management Team, customers, vendors, etc.
As the BESS Senior Services Engineer, you will:- Own responsibility for site safety utilizing best safety practices, building on established Fluence safety culture and utilizing Fluence safety management systems.
- Owner of operations and maintenance of large-scale energy storage sites and primary owner of customer relationships, operating as the primary point of contact for the site.
- Drive and own the O&M Service business performance metrics/KPIs/SLAs for the Area (Availability, Safety, Cost, Quality, etc.). Own the service relationship with the customer. Support customer meetings to ensure efforts are organized, communication is clear and service orders are routed through established processes, ensuring Fluence meets contractual requirements and support closing contract disputes.
- Identify and drive service process/cost improvements – be a leader for the team and take on additional focused scope service issues, i.e. contractor/vendor management, spares, reliability, preventive maintenance planning/execution, etc.
- Inspect, test, repair, and energize utility-scale power and controls equipment, execute various technical tasks, processes, and procedures, such as interpreting single-line drawings and schematics, troubleshooting BESS installations and configurations, performing electrical installation and testing, troubleshooting control wiring and I/O racks, configuring TCP/IP and Modbus protocols, etc.
- Perform scheduled & unscheduled maintenance on various BESS equipment and related assets (including and not limited to: SCADA communications, Inverters, MV & HV operations, HVAC, substations switching & inspections, etc.).
- Assist the FST/FSE/ASM with creating/reviewing/approving/executing Work Orders, accurate inventory management, data collection and summary reports.
- Support the FSE&Ts in managing multiple 3rd party service vendors in the safe execution of O&M services across contracted projects. Think and operate strategically about your service area and region.
- Actively identify and own process improvements to our growing service organization to reduce costs, improve reliability and improve quality of our services.
- Hold responsibility for meeting timelines and schedules, scopes of work, quality assurances and inspections, successful troubleshooting and repairs, and work orders completion.
- Maintain open lines of communication to technicians, engineers, and managers. Utilize stop-work authority when warranted. Alert project team members immediately of issues and concerns.
- Drive continuous improvement activities, and foster relationships with cross-functional teams to facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing.
- Develop and manage the service budget for sites within the managed portfolio.
- Collaborate closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure project maintenance success and alignment with organization objectives.

What will our ideal candidate bring to Fluence?- Undergraduate degree preferred (BSEE, BSME, BSCE) or HS Degree with 8-10 years’ experience working in the electrical or renewable energy industries within generation / operations / technical teams (solar/wind/BESS/gas/hydro/distribution).
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills related to electrical troubleshooting, read and interpret schematic drawings, ability to follow company QC and testing procedures.
- Preferred experience with:
- Bidirectional inverters, 1500VDC and 630 VAC systems, extra for substations.
- Using electrical testing equipment, including meggers and multimeters.
- Managed Ethernet Switches, Media Converters (Fiber & Serial).
- HVAC & Chiller systems operations & maintenance.
- Ability to adapt to dynamic conditions, stay focused/execute tasks, and work overtime as needed.
- Must be willing to travel frequently to sites within the designated service area.
- Able to operate company vehicles both on site as well as on public roads and highways. Must have a current driver’s license with a good DMV record.
- Requires ability to physically bend, stoop, sit, stand, walk, reach, climb ladders/steps, & lift up to 50lbs.
$130,000 - $155,000 a year
