The Associate Director, Research Projects-School of Medicine, Hematology Medical Oncology, serves as Key Personnel and leads a program for a research study funded by the National Institutes of Health to promote a more diverse future STEM and biomedical research workforce by involving K-12 students in informal science education programs (after school and summer). The program utilizes national and statewide Cancer Big Data and principles of Artificial Intelligence to solve real community cancer-related problems. The program investigates interventions to increase underrepresented populations in STEM careers. Data are collected to evaluate student changes in program content knowledge, intent to pursue a future career in STEM, improvements in self-efficacy, and other student outcomes. May assume leadership of additional programs targeting K-12 students for future funded research grants.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Reports to a principal investigator of sponsored projects.
- Exercises considerable latitude and independent judgment in overseeing the day-to-day operation of the research core.
- Serves as a consultant and provides technical expertise in scientific theory, research and methods of collection and analysis of data sets for a variety of research projects.
- Using an advanced knowledge of research methodology and techniques, provides leadership in the planning and development of survey instruments, guidelines, and procedures to collect required data.
- Coordinates various aspects of the study.
- Routinely develops research protocols.
- Reviews and edits text for studies.
- Conducts extensive literature searches and effectively summarizes reported research findings and their applicability to the research.
- Coordinates research and intervention activities with the team.
- Provides direction to consultants and team members.
- Coordinates and conducts special meetings.
- Develops and conducts presentations, represents Emory at national meetings, and co-authors publications.
- Collaborates on or authors reports and papers.
- Performs related responsibilities as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Sociology, Psychology or a related discipline and five or more years of research/professional experience, OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
- Effective writing, analytic, presentation and organizational skills.
- Experience managing and executing multiple projects and working with senior health policy makers and executives is preferred.
- Experience conducting focus groups.

- Experience with or strong interest in working with communities and partner organizations.
- Able to engage effectively with K-12 students, parents, teachers, and mentors.
- Commitment to reducing disparities and inequities in STEM education and career opportunities.
- Conveys high levels of enthusiasm and excitement about program opportunities to potential students, parents, teachers, mentors, and others to facilitate recruitment and involvement in the project.
- Experience with collecting and analyzing quantitative and/or qualitative data.
- Regulatory experience, including working with IRB for study approvals, amendments, and writing informed consent and other regulatory documents.
- Prior experience in community-engaged programs or other similar types of research.
- Knowledge of REDCap or other database skills.
- Ability to review and edit protocols, study forms, student/parent communications, and other research materials.
ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:
- Serves as a consultant and trainer of other study staff, collaborators, mentors, interns and students.
- Organizes teaching of informal science curriculum, presents parts of curriculum to students, and leads small group discussions as part of curriculum.
- Serves as Point of Contact for undergraduate and graduate STEM mentors, and other team members.
- Routinely develops protocols, logistics, and plans for study implementation in different settings for After School and Summer K-12 programs.
- Communicates and collaborates with community partners, including schools, K-12 teachers and administrators, community organizations, advocacy groups, governmental agencies, and academic institutions.
- Directly oversees K-12 student applications to participate in after-school and summer informal science education programs, evaluates applications, conducts interviews, and communicates with students, parents, teachers and community entities interested in programs.
- Works directly with Emory undergraduate and graduate students who serve as STEM Mentors to provide training, ensure compliance, organize their involvement in the program, and recruit additional STEM Mentors as needed.
- Works closely with other Emory University entities, e.g., Facilities, IT, Admissions, to ensure logistics are planned and the study is conducted appropriately and in a timely fashion.
- Handles budgetary issues, manages expenses, orders supplies, and coordinates payments due to community partners or product vendors.
- Helps develop budgets for grant proposals by investigating and reporting costs of budgetary items.
- Plans and coordinates study-related events, team meetings, summer workshops, student academy, after school program, exhibits at local, regional, and national meetings.
- Works closely with other Emory faculty who may serve as research mentors or host lab tours.
- Develops and conducts presentations, represents Emory and the study team at institutional, state, regional and national meetings and co-authors publications.
- Contacts ongoing community partners and schools and conducts outreach to new organizations and schools to build new partnerships and collaborators.
- Engages in marketing and communications related to dissemination of study information, recruitment of students and/or teachers, and efforts to recruit diverse populations to participate.
- Maintains and enhances as needed the program website, student application portal, and online data collection tools.
- Conducts literature searches and effectively summarizes reported research findings and their application to the research.
- Collaborates on or co-authors progress reports or other reports and summary materials.
NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home regularly but must be able to commute to Emory University on a flexible weekly schedule based upon business needs. Schedule is based on agreed upon guidelines of department. This role requires residency in the state of GA. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
