The Department
Founded in 1970, the Department of Family Medicine and Population Health at VCU has a long and proud history of training medical students and resident physicians. Our Department houses all of our family medicine medical student education programs, including a highly rated clerkship and two longitudinal, four-year track programs.
The Residency
VCU’s Department of Family Medicine and Population Health is incredibly excited to share with you that we are in the process of creating a new rural training track family medicine residency. The residency will focus on serving the underserved in the urban population in Richmond, VA, in the rural area of South Hill, VA, and internationally!
Core Faculty Position
As a founding core faculty member, you will be responsible for helping to build this program from the ground up! We anticipate having residents in post July 1, 2023. Prior to that time, the Core Faculty will be responsible for working with the Program Director, Associate Program Director, and other Faculty to design curriculum, develop the Primary Family Medicine Residency Clinics, and help develop relationships with the communities we serve.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Demonstrates dedication to Family Medicine Education.
- Responsible for maintaining a practice/panel at the Family Medicine Residency Clinic.
- Responsible for the supervision, direction, teaching, and evaluation of the Family Medicine Residents.
- Continual improvement of the Family Medicine Residency Program and support to maintain full accreditation by the ACGME.
- Perform such duties as are appropriate and necessary to the position and operation of the VCU Health Systems and the Family Medicine Residency Program.
- Perform such duties as are required in the position of Core Family Medicine Residency Faculty by ACGME.
- Recruit, retain, and promote high caliber, diverse residents who exhibit interest and commitment to rural healthcare, health equity, excellence in patient care and medical education, high ethics, and a commitment to a high order of professionalism.
- Participate in scholarship in accordance with ACGME Family Medicine Residency Faculty requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Able to obtain license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Shall have completed an accredited residency program in Family Medicine.
- Shall be certified and recertified if applicable by the American Board of Family Medicine.
- Past experience in providing direct patient care to underserved populations across multiple settings.
- Willing and able to care for patients in both the inpatient and outpatient setting.
- Commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications
- Past experience in providing direct patient care and/or residency training in rural settings.
- Direct experience in the medical education of learners such as residents, medical students, inter-professional learners, etc.
- Confidence and willingness to be a faculty lead in one or more of the following:
- Care of pregnant women including antenatal, labor and delivery, and postpartum care.
- Care of adults in the inpatient setting.
- Care of children in the inpatient setting.
- Mental Health treatment in the primary care setting.
- Substance abuse treatment to include medically-assisted therapy.
- Primary care Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) and/or specialized procedural training in emergency, inpatient and outpatient settings.
