Job Overview
We are actively seeking an experienced Lead Systems Planning Engineer to join our Grid Integration and Planning team in Boston, MA!
Responsibilities & Duties
- Support projects by carrying out transmission analysis and working with interconnection interfaces in PJM, NYISO, and ISO-NE.
- Develop work products that provide sufficient decision-making information to management and to effectuate the interconnection of projects to the transmission system.
- Perform, lead, or facilitate engineering and transmission assessments and analyses.
- Support production cost modeling, economic and regional market evaluations to assist in key strategic insights, identify or confirm project opportunities and solutions.
- Apply innovative approaches to simulation and analysis that can help identify or support new initiatives.
- Conduct technical analysis as needed to support potential project partnerships.
- Document, present, and report findings and justifications. Help prepare executive summaries or investment committee papers.
- Support or lead on siting, permitting and licensing requirements and/or hearings, if required.
- Represent National Grid interests on national, regional, and local levels when necessary.
- Oversee consultants, engineers or other subject matter experts as required to augment or complement the Business Development team.
- Work in a project team and matrix environment interacting with individuals across functions in the US and UK.
Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor’s in electrical engineering, Mathematics or related technical fields. Power systems focus desired.
- Experience in transmission system analysis.
- Experience using PSSE and Tera software.
- Aspen, Power world, PSFL, and PSCAD desired but not required.
- Demonstrated ability to translate complex model outputs into business insight & articulate the impact of results.
- Broad knowledge of US power industry standards, structures, policies, regulations & market fundamentals is essential.
- Familiarity with recent trends and technologies in electric transmission, on-shore and off-shore wind, other large-scale renewable generation, energy storage, conventional generation and emerging technologies such as green hydrogen.
- Strong track record of relevant professional experience in projects, including developing business cases, optioneering, data analysis, estimating and work structure planning.
- Flair for handling & manipulating data to forecast, derive trends and test sensitivities.
- Interest in offshore wind and competitive transmission project development and execution.
- Excellent communication skills with proven ability to persuade, challenge and build credibility based on personally derived recommendations.
- Computational literacy including handling large data sets is mandatory.
- Fundamental understanding of the components of offshore and onshore transmission grid assets including key risks and opportunities is required.
- Knowledge of NERC reliability standards.
- Ability to develop tools and processes to facilitate best practice & knowledge sharing.
The salary range for this role takes into account a wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licenses and certifications; and other related skillsets.
