Essential Functions
- Clinical Care
- Provides hospice/palliative care consultation in the acute care setting, long-term care, or home setting and palliative and end-of-life care issues.
- Serves as a representative of VIA Health Partners Palliative Care Program in external workgroups and committees whose focus is to create and implement palliative care programs.
- Makes home visits/patient assessments and interventions on patients who have complex symptom management and/or psychosocial issues or when requested by the interdisciplinary group.
- Provides supervision and direction for hospice/palliative care physicians and other advanced practice clinicians.
- Reviews patient eligibility for services including admission and re-certification.
- Develops measures to ensure the most effective and economic patient interventions.
- Attends/Serves on interdisciplinary team as medical resource.
- Oversees the certification/recertification process, playing several roles to ensure the process is being conducted appropriately.
- Participates in the development, review, and modification of comprehensive plans of care with other members of the team.
- Cares for patients utilizing pain and symptom management interventions that are based on hospice/palliative care established guidelines and standards.
- Serves as a medical resource for VIA staff.
- Acts as a role model and provides consultation for attending physicians.
- As the only Medical Director in the organization, this position may have a physician designee to sign/authorize in his/her absence.
- Community Relations/Education
- Provides education for community physicians on the principles of hospice and palliative medicine.
- Serves as liaison between VIA and community physicians.
- Collaborates with long-term care facility (LTCF) medical directors who have contracts with VIA.
- Participates in professional organizations related to hospice and palliative medicine.
- Assists in the education and training of medical and nursing schools in the community.
- Assists with continuing education programs.
- Assists in the development and/or actively participates in research protocols in hospice and palliative care.
- Supervision
- Participates in the interview and the hiring of Medical Services staff.
- Assists in the orientation of Medical Services personnel.
- Evaluates the competency of Medical Services practitioners on an annual basis.
- Reviews medical service practitioner documentation.
- Participates in the medical services on-call schedule and provides physician back-up to advanced practice clinicians.
- Administration and Management
- Actively participates in audits of claims denials by fiscal intermediaries and other third-party payors.
- Participates in hospice/palliative care performance improvement (PI) activities.
- Assists with the development and review of policies and procedures for clinical care, emergency care, and medical research.
- Works with AVP Medical Services to develop the annual budget for Medical Services.
- Assists with quality improvement, as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications
- A Doctoral Degree in medicine (M.D.) and current active NC Board of Medicine practicing physician license required.
- Minimum 2 years experience in hospice and palliative care and certification in Hospice & Palliative Medicine. In lieu of current Hospice & Palliative Medicine board certification, must become certified within 1 year of hire date.
- Computer proficiency is required.
