The Department of Family and Social Medicine (DFSM) at Montefiore Medical Center (MMC), Bronx, New York seeks a new Family Medicine Residency Program Director to join a pioneer and nationally recognized primary care Residency Program in Social Medicine which integrates three residency programs: Family Medicine, Social Pediatrics, and Primary Care/Social Internal Medicine. The Residency Program in Social Medicine (RPSM) focuses on training exemplary primary care physicians to work with historically excluded and structurally marginalized populations and to advocate for social justice and health equity.
The DFSM central office is located at the Northern part of the Bronx, two blocks from the main hospital. Albert Einstein College of Medicine is the academic center for Montefiore Medical Center. The DFSM is a large academic enterprise including the Division of Education which encompasses the three residency programs, a pre-doctoral program and fellowship programs (Palliative Care, Homeless Health Care).
The Family Medicine Clinical Division includes one resident outpatient clinical site (Williamsbridge Family Practice) located in the Bronx, as well as a Family Medicine inpatient unit and a Palliative Care service. A productive Research Division and a pioneering Division of Community Health are also part of the department.
We seek a visionary leader to shape the future direction of our vibrant family medicine residency program. The Program Director will ensure excellence in resident training, support faculty in teaching and scholarship, and provide clinical services addressing the health care needs of the Bronx. They will integrate a biopsychosocial model with a social justice and antiracism focus in the training. This position is 70% residency admin, 30% clinical responsibilities.
The Director must be Board Certified in Family Medicine, meet the ACGME requirements for Family Medicine Program Director and have a minimum of three (3) years of experience in administrative, educational and/or clinical services in an ACGME accredited residency program. Ideal candidates will have experience as a Core Faculty, Associate Director or Director of a Family Medicine Residency Training Program. Five (5) years of experience in teaching in a residency program is preferred.
This position is responsible for all clinical and business aspects of the residency program, assuring compliance with accreditation standards, ensuring high quality didactic education, and overseeing, with the medical directors, all clinical activity at their clinical practice site. Applicants must be licensed or qualified to secure a NY medical license and appointment to the Medical Staff at Medical Center and demonstrate a commitment to providing an excellent educational experience for our residents and medical students.
Our 10 resident per year program (total 30 residents) trains family medicine physicians to provide compassionate and comprehensive care to a diverse, urban, medically under-resourced community. Trainees are guided to excel in academic and clinical medical careers.
The position will include leadership, administrative, teaching and patient care responsibilities.
The successful candidate will develop and recruit strong faculty and residents and advance collaborative relationships with academic and community partners.
- Responsible for all aspects of program development and growth

Program Education:
Ensure ongoing maintenance of certification and compliance with ACGME requirements. Knowledge and expertise in ACGME policies, rules and procedures as well as the knowledge to navigate these to accomplish program goals.

Program Operations:
Oversee daily operations of residency program. Plan to continually evaluate and revise systems for daily operations, documentation and communication in order to improve efficiency, effectiveness, anticipation of obstacles, clarity of roles and responsibilities, and use and maintenance of evaluation systems.
Coordination with hospital, health centers, AECOM and RPSM
Residents:
Recruit high quality residents. Review and revise recruitment strategy and process.
Retain high quality residents. Assess and address residents' and chief residents' satisfaction and needs.
Provide ongoing personal support to residents and chief residents.
Assist faculty and residents directly with assessing individual learning needs and implementing individual learning plans.
Resident competency evaluation twice yearly for every resident.
Remediation of residents with deficiencies.
Oversee and coordinate resident rotation schedules.
Precept residents weekly.
Teaching Attending minimum 4 weeks on Family Medicine inpatient unit.
Participation in didactic teaching sessions.
Faculty:
Recruit high quality faculty and orient as needed.
Faculty Development - assist with planning, coordination, implementation, and evaluation.
Oversee Clinical Competency Committee for resident evaluations.
Promote and support faculty scholarship.
Assist and supervise resident learning plans and evaluation.
Assist and supervise resident remediation plans.
Problem solving and concrete assistance.
Faculty support - including recognizing faculty achievements and personal events.
Health Centers:
Oversee resident practices to ensure ACGME requirements are met and balance between service and education is appropriate.
Maintain a continuity family medicine practice.
Monitor resident productivity monthly.
Assist with Joint Commission compliance.
Oversee creation and management of schedules.
Residency Program in Social Medicine:
Family Medicine Track administrative meeting weekly.
Administrative Leadership Group every 2 weeks.
Family Medicine Education Leadership Group monthly.
All Faculty Meeting monthly.
Track Director's Meeting monthly.
Social Medicine Curriculum Committee monthly and interval work/planning.
Social Medicine Immersion Month Planning, Implementation, Evaluation as needed.
Medical Students:
Mentoring and recruitment of medical students.
Didactic teaching for clerkship.
Medical student supervision at Health Center.
Oversight of acting interns on inpatient unit.
