Vice Dean for Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG)
School of Medicine
University of California, San Francisco (UCSF)
The School of Medicine at UC San Francisco seeks an outstanding individual to serve as the Vice Dean for Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. This position will require strong leadership and organizational skills, as well as a deep understanding of academic policies and procedures. Must also have:
- Demonstrated effectiveness as a leader of faculty, staff, and learners.
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.
- Demonstrated effectiveness in advancing a culture and climate of diversity, equity, belonging, and anti-oppression.
The Vice Dean will provide vision, leadership, and strategic direction to all academic departments based at ZSFG. Serving as the Dean’s main representative, the Vice Dean will ensure that ZSFG is an excellent site for faculty providing clinical care; the teaching of medical students, residents, and fellows; and, for the entire spectrum of research (basic, clinical, translational and population health). To accomplish these activities, the Vice Dean will collaborate with the Dean, the CEO of ZSFG, the Vice Deans, the Department Chairs, and the Chiefs of Service at ZSFG.
Key Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the Affiliation Agreement with the Department of Public Health of the City and County of San Francisco.
- Serve as the contract officer; responsible for compliance, including the performance by the Chiefs of Service at ZSFG of the duties assigned under the agreement.
- Prepare, negotiate, and administer the final contract budget each year. The annual budget is approximately $200 million per year.
- Oversee the UCSF educational and research programs in accordance with the Affiliation Agreement.
- Serve on the Clinical Practice Group (CPG) Executive Committee and Board which oversees and ensures compliance of all UCSF professional fee billing activities at ZSFG.
- Collaborate with UCSF Department Chairs, ZSFG CEO, and Chiefs of Service at ZSFG in faculty and leadership recruitments and physician wellness.
- Manage the allocation and efficiency of research and academic space, in alignment with SOM and campus policies.
- Lead the Dean’s Office at ZSFG, which includes approximately 200 staff and is responsible for operations such as risk management, IT, and facilities.
- Serve as key advisor to the Dean as a member of the SOM Dean’s Council.
- Oversee faculty and staff engagement and experience programs.
- Serve on multiple leadership committees.
An MD or equivalent degree and a faculty rank of associate or full professor required.

The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 5. The minimum base salary range for this position is $139,500 - $411,500. This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.
