Duties
The New Mexico VA Healthcare System (NMVAHCS) is seeking an Anesthesiologist in Albuquerque, NM. The NMVAHCS has an academic affiliation with the University of New Mexico. This position has the possibility of obtaining a clinical appointment at the University of New Mexico. This position allows time for academic study and responsibilities. The Anesthesia Service is a collegial department consisting of Anesthesiologists and CRNAs, with anesthesia residents, medical students and SRNAs that rotate through the department.
- Full range of perioperative care. This includes extensive participation in preoperative optimization of surgical patients; intraoperative clinical pathways including ERAS; postoperative management including participation in care in the surgical intensive care unit; and acute and chronic pain management services.
- Applicant must be capable of performing anesthesia for cardiothoracic surgeries such as CABGs, aortic valve replacements, and lobectomies. If the applicant does not currently perform anesthesia for these types of cases, the applicant will be mentored to gain proficiency in the aforementioned cases. After a period of mentorship, the applicant will be expected to be a part of the cardiac anesthesia call team.
- Provide anesthesia for a variety of sub-specialties including cardiothoracic, vascular, urology, gynecology, ENT, ophthalmology, general surgery, colorectal surgery, orthopedics, podiatry, behavioral health, gastroenterology, cardiology, pain, interventional radiology, pulmonary, etc.
- CRNA/resident supervision with some opportunity to personally perform cases.
- Provide excellent, safe anesthetic care to our nation's veterans.
Work Schedule: Anesthesia OR schedule is Monday-Friday 0630-1500 with rotating in-house evening/weekend/holiday shifts.
Requirements Conditions of Employment

- Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
- Must be proficient in written and spoken English.

- Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
- Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
- Participation in the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination program is a requirement for all Veterans Health Administration Health Care Personnel (HCP).
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements: - United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
