Job Summary
Establishes credit risk policy and risk appetite alongside Credit and Risk Executives, aligning the credit risk framework, practices, and governance to both the strategic direction of Synovus and within an appropriate and compliant risk posture. Responsible for strategic execution of the credit risk management discipline, ensuring appropriate and timely identification, measurement, monitoring and reporting of credit risk while having appropriate policies and practices in place for the Bank to strategically operate within risk appetite. Key responsibilities include leading credit policy and governance, strategic credit analytics, credit market intelligence, loan portfolio reporting, credit data governance and key credit support functions such as managed assets and valuation services. While the Chief Credit Officer is ultimately accountable, this role is responsible for the implementation of credit strategy, policies, and procedures to ensure soundness, diversification, and consistency for the entire organization.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Develops and recommends credit objectives, policies and procedures. Provides strategic direction and guidance to leaders engaged in credit risk management, to include direct supervision of staff. Manages and directs the credit portfolio to ensure alignment with strategic direction of enterprise in concert with Credit and Risk Executives, overseeing the financial institution's credit portfolio.
- Assists Credit and Risk Executives in directing and providing oversight of the interpretation of credit analysis and reporting from each line of business to executive management, regulatory agencies and the investment community. Provides current and long-term strategic direction for the Credit Risk function throughout the enterprise including Corporate and Investment Banking, Wholesale, Community, Small Business and Consumer Banking. Monitors credit quality, risk rating migration and relevant trends in portfolio.
- Owns and administers loan policy and credit regulatory relations. Assumes responsibility and is accountable for adherence to bank policies and procedures. Directs the development or revisions of loan policies, procedures and agreements to ensure compliance with audit and regulatory processes.
- Resolves credit policy issues identified internally or by the regulators by coordinating due diligence efforts with line-of-business leaders. Proactively evaluates policy, ensuring it remains current and accurate, adapting it where appropriate to evolving business or environmental impacts, and making recommendations to ensure the appropriate risk posture is maintained.
- Responsible for the delivery and governance of the credit adjudication infrastructure, to include the establishment and maintenance of committees, procedures, materials handling, communications and logistics. Ensures credit approvals fall within designated Board and committee mandates. Coordinates and facilitates Synovus Credit Risk Committee and its underlying sub-committees.
- May assist Credit Executives with adjudication requests as appropriate given size, complexity, or special significance of such. As needed, provides oversight and direction alongside Credit Executives for the review and analysis of loans which, because of size, complexity or special significant, require special handling.
- Provides credit portfolio analysis, guidance and insight for internal and external stakeholders. Contributes to earnings release process, establishes and monitors credit risk appetite thresholds and concentrations limits. Performs various modeling scenarios including portfolio stress testing. Generates and reconciles financial reporting. Conducts peer analysis as appropriate.
- Delivers economic, market and asset class intelligence to various constituencies. Produces and maintains commercial credit portfolio dashboarding. Performs collateral valuation and sensitivity analysis. Facilitates economic advisory council and forecasting committee.
- Produces loan level reporting, administers and monitors loan portfolio tasks, centralizes and enhances data governance including building out and maintenance of data integrity framework and quality assurance.
- Oversees the Managed Assets division which includes the responsibilities of collection, workout, impairment and recovery of problem assets.
- Manages Valuation Services supporting the line of business including facilitation and review of appraisals and environmental due diligence requirements.

- Consults with the Senior HR Leadership to develop and implement strategies to attract and maintain a highly skilled and engaged workforce by diagnosing capability gaps; recruiting, selecting, and developing talent; supporting mentorship, workforce development, and succession planning and supporting associate efforts in these areas. Keeps HR informed about strategic business plan initiatives that require HR support.
- Provides leadership, direction and growth opportunities to members of the department, performing those responsibilities in accordance with the Company's policies and applicable laws.
- Manages the annual performance management and merit processes for direct and indirect reports. Coaches and develops team members and builds a work environment where team members are engaged and feel a positive sense of achievement about their role in the company. Works closely with Human Resources regarding employee relations, compensation, training, posting and filling vacant positions and other Human Resources related matters.
- Each team member is expected to be aware of risk within their functional area. This includes observing all policies, procedures, laws, regulations and risk limits specific to their role. Additionally, they should raise, and report known or suspected violations to the appropriate Company authority in a timely fashion.

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of all banking financial, technical, and operations principles related to lending.
- Broad credit risk management experience, including responsibility for credit quality of company balance sheet, in an organization of comparable size and diversity.
- Managing relationships with senior executives, regulators, key stakeholders and customers
- Implementing enterprise-wide initiatives; setting the strategic course for the business and analysis of results relative to established objective.
- Broad knowledge of credit software applications
- Ability to independently formulate and draft balanced, well-reasoned recommendations and to present such recommendations persuasively to senior management.
Minimum Education:
Bachelor’s degree in finance, Business Administration or a related discipline. Master's Degree preferred.
Minimum Experience:
15+ years of job specific work experience with demonstrated professional growth and achievement in an organization of comparable size, business diversity, scope and complexity.
