About the role:
We are seeking an outstanding Senior Mechanical Engineer, Plastics New Product Introduction (pNPI) to join the Manufacturing Systems Engineering (MSE) team at 10x Genomics. This is a key position for the commercialization of consumable products within the Global Operations Engineering team. This multi-disciplinary position involves close collaboration with various groups including Microfluidics, Supply Chain Management, and New Product Development. You will play a key role in transferring new plastic components to volume manufacturing. This role partners with the Operations, NPI, Customer Support, and R&D teams to improve robustness and efficiencies across multiple product lines.
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in supporting complex plastic components used in on-market equipment for the life science or medical device industry. They should possess a broad understanding of the design and manufacturing of complex plastic systems and excel in solving complex problems. As a member of the team, you will be instrumental in supporting 10x manufacturing, supply chain, and service & support teams to deliver products that enable accelerated understanding of biology.
What you will be doing:
- Act as a technical lead for the release to volume manufacturing of complex plastic consumables, including LSR-thermoplastic assemblies, COC/COP precision molded microfluidics consumables, and related plastic components.
- Perform Design for Manufacturability analysis on new plastic components and provide feedback on designs with supplier and Manufacturing team input.
- Qualify new plastic components with suppliers to ensure vendor quality, yield and reliability.
- Lead the transfer of new parts to suppliers utilizing compounding, molding, solvent bonding of thermoplastics and elastomers, COC, COP, and LSR.
- Organize and manage projects to improve costs and product yield, ensuring smooth production transfer of new designs to established volume manufacturers.
- Utilize Arena PLM and Oracle ERP systems to manage product lifecycle and manufacturing processes effectively.
- Conduct occasional supplier visits to support quality audits and new vendor capability assessments.
- Ensure close collaboration with microfluidics and pNPI teams.
Minimum Requirements:
- BS in Mechanical, Plastics, or Manufacturing Engineering.
- At least 5+ years of post-graduate, industrial experience, preferably within biotechnology or life science engineering or manufacturing.
- Solid 3D mechanical design experience using CAD with SolidWorks experience a plus.
- Proven ability to transfer conceptual designs into scalable, manufacturable plastic components.
- Experience injection molding, co-molding, thermoforming, etc., including designing parts for plastic molding, iterating on mold parameters, and troubleshooting issues from molding.
- Experience with structured problem-solving methods and proficiency in using large data sets to drive decisions.
- Experience with Arena PLM and Oracle ERP systems; creating, managing, and reviewing engineering change orders, engineering drawings, purchase specifications, and receiving inspection reports.
- Strong understanding of geometric tolerancing per ASME Y14.5, dimensional stack-ups, inspection procedures and metrology equipment.
- Ability to travel internationally as needed.
- Ability to perform under pressure and adapt to changes (e.g., priorities and timelines).
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Strong cross collaboration skills and experience with vendor management.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- A minimum of 5 years of industrial experience in plastics consumables, including DfM/DfX, formulations, compounding, molding, testing, co-molding, and LSR overmolding.
- Familiarity with statistical data analysis tools and design of experiments.
- Direct experience with plastics injection molding process optimization and process transfer.
- Familiarity with laboratory and clean room environments.
- Familiarity with liquid silicone rubber (LSR), polymers, and material properties.
