Atomic Machines is on Earth to radically advance humanity’s command over matter. Our mission is real-time bits-to-atoms manufacturing of anything at any scale, and to that end, we’re developing an entirely new digital micro-device manufacturing platform that is going to redefine how things are made, and do so while simultaneously enabling the rapid creation at any scale of new classes of machines – think medical micro-robotics, true lab-on-chip microfluidics, tunable antennas, ultrafast high-power and high-frequency RF switching devices and many more. The first device we are building with our platform has exceptional large-scale product/market fit and commercial traction, and we are pushing hard to share it with the world.
Our offices are in Berkeley and Santa Clara, California.
About the role:
We are seeking a seasoned Principal Mechanical Design Engineer, Matter Compiler to join our growing team. This individual will be an expert in designing and building complex dynamic mechanical precision systems. They will contribute to the overall design of our novel robotic manufacturing platform, as well as be a technical leader for significant systems and strategic technologies from the beginning of the product life cycle.
What you’ll do:
- Own and lead architecture, development, and qualification of complex systems within our automated fabrication platform incorporating process technologies such as physical vapor deposition, chemical vapor deposition, micro-fluidics, material handling, laser micromachining, lamination, conveyance systems, and more.
- Lead a cross-functional team of highly experienced mechanical, software, electrical, process and materials engineers; managing projects, risks, and shaping our technology development path.
- Be a pillar for engineering excellence and support your work with concise documentation, models, and analytical tools to provide detailed understanding of machine performance.
- Drive your work to completion with fabrication and assembly efforts leveraging our in-house lab and machine shop.
- Work with experts from other teams to ensure that systems are performant while being efficient, operable, and reliable; challenge assumptions and build strong professional relationships.
What you’ll need:
- 10+ years of experience designing dynamic mechanical precision systems including actuators and motors.
- Experience with design of physical vapor deposition systems (sputtering, thermal evaporation, electron beam evaporation).
- Experience with developing in-line metrology and inspection systems.
- Experience with high vacuum system design.
- Proficiency in systems engineering and system architecture.
- Multiple successful product life cycles that you’ve stewarded from conception to successful market launch.
- Experience leading cross functional technical teams toward successful product development in multiple technical domains.
- Exceptional command of engineering fundamentals, design principles, and detailed drawing.
- Infectious creativity and inventiveness, the ability to take and manage technical risks, and lead by influencing.
- Be resourceful, flexible, and adaptable; no task is too big or too small.
- A willingness to learn; a willingness to teach.
- Minimum B.S. Mechanical Engineering (or other related Engineering field equivalent).
Bonus Points For:
- Industry experience in product development processes such as Agile, ICSM, etc.
$190,000 - $240,000 a year
