Berkeley Lab's Environment, Health & Safety Division seeks an Electrical Compliance Engineer (ECE) to ensure compliance with electrical codes and standards for equipment installations and modifications. As a Subject Matter Expert (SME), the ECE plays a crucial role in identifying and resolving design and construction errors within a multidisciplinary team.
This position will support the ALS (https://www.als.lbl.gov), a world-class accelerator-based user facility that provides high intensity high energy photon beams for science. A 200-meter circumference electron accelerator generates photon packets that feed the more than 40 independent beamlines where more than 2000 scientists per year perform their experiments. The ALS has recently started a major accelerator upgrade project to rejuvenate the facility for many years to come.

- Ensure compliance with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) policies, procedures, and standards in electrical and fire safety codes as the SME.
- Collaborate with Engineers of Record (EOR), Inspectors of Record (IOR), Construction Subcontractors, and Construction Managers to enhance electrical installation safety and quality.
- Foster cooperative relationships with Science and Operations Divisions to support LBNL’s mission.
- Review electrical drawings/specifications to verify compliance with codes and project specifications before accepting construction documents.
- Provide clarification and documentation to resolve design review and inspection comments effectively.
- Research and provide engineering direction on code compliance and suggest protective equivalencies.
- Implement process improvements to enhance the AHJ program’s effectiveness.
- Recommend enhancements to LBNL master electrical specifications and related procedures.
- Utilize software for collaborative design reviews, presentations, communications, and archival file management.
What is Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area OR equivalent professional experience/training and a minimum of 8 years of full-time experience in electrical design, technical plan reviews, or electrical inspection for fire or building code regulations OR 12 years of education/relevant work experience.
