Job Description:
This position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and directing all activities, projects, and personnel within the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Disciplines. This position will serve as the direct report for leaders of various building systems sectors within both disciplines of Electrical and Mechanical. This position will act as a liaison both internally and externally for Mechanical Engineering services by interacting with Market Sector Leaders, Project Managers, personnel at Minneapolis and other corporate offices, clientele, consultants, and vendors.
Responsibilities:
- Determine personnel needs by disciplines, by team, and for each individual project based upon the current and projected workload; collect information and feedback from managers including staffing recommendations and workload projections.
- Convey personnel needs to the Director of Operations and Human Resources and participate in the recruitment, interviewing, and selection of prospective candidates for Senior, Professional, and Technical level positions.
- Act as a mentor for discipline personnel by providing continuous assistance and support through professional training and career development.
- Build work plans associated with personnel development within each discipline and review the performance and work quality through evaluations that are conducted on a regular basis including formal annual and mid-year reviews; provide recognition for outstanding contributions as well as constructive criticism for areas of improvement.
- Administer salary and hourly compensation for discipline personnel; provide recommendations on salary adjustments and approve personnel promotions and transfers.
- Review all Mechanical and Electrical Engineering deliverables for technical content, drawing quality, and adherence to code/project requirements.
- Participate and lead discipline meetings and design reviews with Mechanical and Electrical personnel.
- Discuss discipline and project objectives, requirements, and budgets with clientele, Mechanical and Electrical staff, and Director of Operations.
- Establish design standards and procedures to manage the work of staff as well as the project teams by assisting in the review of quality assurance and quality control evaluations.
- Be active in your community by attending regional and national seminars, conventions, and summits; collaborate with staff, Project Managers, and Market Sector Leaders to improve or develop new engineering methods.
- Continue research and support publishing in trade journals to demonstrate passion and knowledge within each of the disciplines.
- Provide oversight and assistance with writing and editing of program documents, specifications, and equipment selection for building systems and devices.
- Conduct or delegate job-site inspections to ensure projects are adhering to specifications and design intent.
- Participate in reviews with various governing agencies for code compliance in relation to zoning laws, fire regulations, building codes, and other ordinances.
- Perform other duties as assigned or instructed.
Qualifications:
- Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with discipline personnel, office staff, and clientele.
- Demonstrated ability to promote and establish teamwork and individual leadership within the discipline.
- Ability to successfully lead a team of engineering professionals to meet and exceed project, discipline, and business unit goals.
- Extensive knowledge of building codes.
- Thorough working knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications and mechanical design software.
- Effective time management and organizational skills; ability to manage multiple projects and remain up-to-date on various developmental stages.
- Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of capabilities of AutoCAD, Revit, and other production software.
Education and License Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from an accredited college or university; Master’s Degree or other advanced education is preferred.
- Professional Registration as a Mechanical or Electrical Engineer.
- 15 years minimum experience in engineering in the area of building systems design.
- 5-10 years of progressive management experience.
- Current affiliation and/or membership with local, state, or national industry organization(s).
