Salary Range: The current salary range for this position is $78,200-$123,400 (9-month academic year salary). Off-scale salary and other components of pay, which would yield compensation that is higher than this range, are offered to meet competitive conditions.

Position Description
The University of California, Berkeley School of Education (BSE) seeks a tenure-track faculty member at the Assistant Professor (N/T) level focusing on Reading Development in the Early Grades with an Emphasis on Diverse Childhoods. We seek candidates committed to advancing research and teaching in the field of reading development/early literacy, with a particular focus on diverse childhoods, including but not limited to racial-ethnic, linguistic, cultural, and ability diversity.
Our ideal candidates critically examine ongoing debates around reading instruction and envision literacy innovations for a future where literacy encompasses a wide range of practices across various modes and technologies. Consideration of the challenges and opportunities presented by digital literacy and innovations like artificial intelligence is highly desirable. Candidates should be able to teach and mentor diverse students. We strongly encourage applications from both early career candidates (for example, those who are currently completing a PhD program), as well as those who currently hold an Assistant Professor position.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct and publish cutting-edge and equity-minded research in reading development and early literacy practices, with a focus on diverse childhoods.
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in reading development and instruction, literacy theory, and related areas.
- Develop and maintain an active research agenda that includes seeking external funding.
- Mentor and advise diverse undergraduate and graduate students.
- Engage in service activities at school, university, and community levels.
- Collaborate with colleagues on interdisciplinary research and community outreach initiatives.

Qualifications
Basic Qualifications (required at time of application): Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree), or enrolled in Ph.D. or equivalent international degree-granting program at the time of application.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ph.D. degree (or equivalent international degree).
- Experience working with diverse populations in educational settings.
- A record of or potential for peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national/international conferences.
- Evidence of or potential for successful teaching at the university level.
- Experience in developing or leading community-based research or outreach projects.
- A strong research agenda with evidence of or potential for high-impact scholarship in reading development and early literacy, particularly focusing on diverse childhoods and on the roles that pedagogy and policy play in shaping the public discourse around literacy.
- Evidence of or potential for excellence in teaching and a commitment to innovative, inclusive, equity-focused pedagogy.
- Experience or strong interest in securing external research funding.
- A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in education.
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, students, and community partners.
