Job Summary
The Adhesives & Sealants R&D group at Saint-Gobain Research (SGR) North America is looking for a driven, talented, and experienced researcher to join our current team to conduct adhesives research from formulation to processing and industrial scale-up. The candidate should enjoy learning new technologies, problem solving, and designing innovative and sustainable solutions as part of a diverse worldwide team.
Under the direction of the Global R&D Director, the candidate will design adhesive and sealant formulations, produce lab scale samples, support pilot scale trials and scale-up trials with our manufacturing sites, and analyze experimental outcomes. The candidate should demonstrate an open and collaborative approach in all areas of responsibility and seeks out others to enhance and streamline development and decision making.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Carries major projects through to successful completion with guidance from supervisor. Guidance on project objectives and technical approach are provided but autonomous execution is expected. Projects involve the extension of present or new technology in one or more areas, involving improvement and/or development of products, processes, techniques, and fundamental knowledge. Projects are assigned by supervisor and are several months to years in duration.
- Manages and documents projects effectively under minimal supervision by the direct manager. Data and results to be presented in oral and written form. Includes the generation of project timelines/plans, technical memos, research reports, and presentations to internal or external customers, project teams, and/or management.
- Fabricates product prototypes and characterizes samples using various analytical techniques. Delivers high quality results rapidly and in the format requested by the manager.
- Candidate will provide marketing and manufacturing support. May include application testing, lab scale sample preparation and support for pilot or manufacturing trials. May include travel to manufacturing sites or customers for support. Proactively seeks out all information needed to conduct the trials successfully and delivers the results in the form requested by the customer.
COMPETENCIES:
- Technical expertise in formulation design and validation
- In-depth understanding of polymer materials (polymer chemistry, formulation, processing, etc.) and able to apply polymer structure-property relationships to new material/product/process development.
- Experience in polymer characterization and material property testing. Demonstrated aptitude to quickly understand new concepts and technology and apply them.
- Experience and knowledge of silicone, polyurethane, or silane-modified polymer materials a plus
- Manage projects from inception through scale-up. Good at problem solving, and able to break down complex problems into actionable next steps. Ability to manage multiple projects and deliver outcomes on-time and within budget.
- Confident, motivated, self-starter. Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively.
- Excellent communicator who can communicate technically with people from a wide range of backgrounds and utilize knowledge to advance projects.
- Document accomplishments in clear and coherent technical reports and presentations.
- Demonstrated knowledge in HSE.
Required Qualifications
- BS Degree with a minimum of 12+ years’ experience, or MS with 7+ years of experience, or PhD with 3+ years plus demonstrated technical judgment/accomplishments.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in formulation design and testing of adhesives and sealants, as well as support to scale-up the manufacture of these materials is required.
