The Technical Product Manager for data products plays a critical role in ensuring that Society Data Management and Analytics products and services meet the needs of users by implementing, maintaining, and enhancing the product(s). They bring deep product, functional, and industry expertise to proactively developing solutions to drive key capabilities and Society strategy.
This role partners closely with the Data Stewardship Team, Business Relationship Managers, and other business stakeholders to understand the business needs and usage of their products and how they enable the Society’s strategy. They play a key role in eliciting user stories and requirements, prioritizing a roadmap of work and partnering with engineering to deliver the solutions. They have expert knowledge of their product(s) including functionality, data, and integrations that assist them in working with engineers as well as explaining possibilities and/or limitation to business stakeholders.
The Data Technical Product Manager is essential in ensuring that our Society Data Management and Analytics products are optimized to enable the critical work of over 800 staff members in 40+ offices around the United States, thousands of volunteers.
Essential Functions/Responsibility
Product Management 85%
- Understand the priorities and key concerns of stakeholders, especially the Enterprise Analytics and Data Stewardship teams.
- Clearly communicates business requirements to the project teams, articulating them in both technical and business terms based on the audience.
- Makes recommendations to solve business problems and meet business requirements.
- Partners with the Engineering team to prioritize the product backlogs for the Data Standardization Hub (MDM), IPaaS, Data Catalog, Data Warehouse, and Analytics Platform.
- Participates in Sprint Planning meetings to represent business requirements.
- Monitors the effectiveness of the data management tools in the support of day-to-day operations and analytics requirements.
- Works with Data Stewards and Technology Subject Matter Experts to capture, maintain, and control the Data Catalog taxonomy, a current and accurate business glossary, data dictionaries, and data lineage.
- Helps to determine new data related KPIs and then monitors and delivers the KPIs reports.
- Develops and maintains industry expertise and awareness in data management capabilities.
- Partners with solution vendors to align roadmaps with Society needs.
- Prior to the release of any new feature or function, ensure functional system testing and user acceptance testing is documented, conducted, and approved.
Product Management Center of Excellence 10%
- Collaborates with other Society Product Managers and Project and Portfolio Management to develop and maintain product management best practices.
- Collaborates with other Society Product Managers to develop a functional maturity roadmap for Product Management.
- Regularly identifies areas of improvement to the Product Management lifecycle.
Market and Volunteer Engagement - 5%
- Support local market/office, including but not limited to attending market/office meetings.
- Actively participate in local market/office events as a participant and/or volunteer.
Minimum Experience/Skills /Competencies:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent work experience.
- 6+ years of experience in business systems administration, data management
- Thorough understanding of Data Management tenants such as Master Data Management, ETL, iPaaS, Data Catalog Management, Data Lakes, Analytics Platforms
- Advanced experience with enterprise source systems and of systems that consume master and reference data, including CRM, MDM, ERP, and Data Warehouse/Business Intelligence (i.e., Salesforce, Workday, Talend, Snowflake, etc.)
- Experience developing and maintaining data dictionaries, data catalogs, and business data glossaries.
- Outstanding business engagement and communication skills.
- Proven ability to understand and support the transformation of data across multiple hierarchies and taxonomies.
- Proven ability to collect, aggregate, and standardize data across multiple stakeholders and teams.
- Ability to distill and communicate complex concepts to the leadership team, both verbally and in writing
- Proficient in data analysis tools (including Excel)
- Productively and collaboratively work as part of a geographically dispersed Agile team.
- Ability to deal positively with high levels of uncertainty, ambiguity and shifting priorities.
- Independent, positive, and proactive approach to problem-solving within a team
- Ability to successfully handle multiple value streams across multiple programs, while maintaining composure and professionalism to meet tight deadlines and shifting priorities.
Technical/Other requirements:
- Product Management expertise is a must.
- Experience with SQL databases is required. Familiarity with different database architectures is a plus.
- Proficiency working in Jira is required.
- Proficiency working with data analysis and data profiling tools is required.
- Strong understanding of data & analytics paradigms and technologies is required.
- Experience using a data visualization tool like Power BI or Tableau is a plus.
- Salesforce experience is a plus.
- Talend data management tools experience is a plus.
- Non-profit experience is a plus.
- Proficiency in standard Office tools (Teams, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required.
Compensation & Benefits Info:
Estimated hiring compensation range for this role is $69,000 - $72,000 based on our average compensation schedule. Final offers will be based on candidate geographic location and consider career experience and may vary from this range due to these and other factors.
