The Senior Legal Director Global Risk Management has responsibility for providing strategic legal expertise on risk management with a particular emphasis on international and cross-border trade compliance. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of the relevant regulations, compliance issues, and the ability to provide strategic legal advice to minimize potential risks associated with international business transactions and places a strong emphasis on proactively identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks across various jurisdictions, ensuring the company's adherence to international laws and regulations. This position heavily partners with the Technical Operations and Risk Management group including Enterprise Brand Protection, Global Security and Sustainability, and other enterprise functions, Innovative Medicines, and Med Tech businesses, risk management and compliance functions in emergent risk identification and mitigation, shaping, advancing, and implementing the global risk management structure, overall strategy, including co-developing high-impact solutions in Johnson & Johnson’s business operations and supply chain that meet regulatory commitments and drive efficiency and agility.
The main responsibilities of the Senior Legal Director Global Risk Management include:
- Providing strategic legal counsel on issues and risks related to international & cross-border transactions compliance, such as import/export customs regulations, forced labor, child labor, and human rights risks, (including UFLPA, etc.), current and proposed import bans, including guidance on appropriate controls and governance frameworks.
- Partnering across the Johnson & Johnson Global Legal Organization and with other subject matter experts to respond to inquiries from customers, government agencies, and other stakeholders.
- Developing and implementing international & cross-border transactions compliance related processes and controls to shape, rapidly advance and implement our strategy and governance structure.
- Tracking, interpreting, shaping and advising on proliferating global legislation/regulation in the risk management space.
- Emerging risk identification and mitigation as well as staying abreast of and sharing relevant legislation/regulation, trends and risks; translating the impact of such changes to the business and driving any change management required to ensure compliance with such changes.
- Inputting into critical updates to global policies and procedures related to customs, including advice related to appropriateness of restricted party screening, due diligence and third-party controls.
- Supporting primary and ad hoc customs, cross-border transaction licensing compliance related training and communications.
- Assisting with reviews, regular monitoring, audits, investigations, and related disclosures. Work closely with internal stakeholders and, when necessary, external counsel to resolve compliance-related issues and implementing findings from risk assessments.
- Managing the engagement of outside counsel and budget and building the optimal legal and compliance structure to support business needs.
Qualifications:
- Strong understanding of global trade regulations and compliance requirements is required.
- A licensed attorney with a minimum of 15 years of relevant legal experience is required.
- Experience practicing in cross-border transactions, such as providing strategic legal advice on customs, forced labor/human rights, BIS/OFAC/NRC licensing obligations, investigation/audit of international and cross-border transactions and third-party due diligence is required.
- Healthcare industry experience highly preferred.
- Multi-country, multi-industry, and multi-sector experience across geographies of varied sizes and businesses is preferred.
- Proven track record to shape complex global programs and drive their implementation is preferred.
- Proven track record of identifying, quantifying, and mitigating risk in a balanced manner to meet ethical, legal, and compliance standards and business objectives.
- Proven ability to provide outstanding legal services to, and interact with, a range of senior executives and to ensure high ethical, legal and compliance standards.
- Excellent strategic and analytical skills with a proven ability to adjust and thrive in an ambiguous and rapidly changing environment.
- Ability to take a pragmatic approach, with a willingness to proactively engage with business colleagues to find solutions and implement action plans that are sustainable.

The base pay range for this position is $160,000-$276,000. The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/ performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis.
