Paralegal Specialist I - Victim Witness Services – Expedited Intake System (E.I.S.) in the Felony Screening Unit
Location: E.R. Graham Building, 1350 Northwest 12th Avenue
Position Overview:
The Paralegal Specialist I, in the Felony Screening Unit is responsible for taking telephone statements from victims on Felony Probable Cause arrest cases and consistently and proactively following-up with obtaining statements prior to arraignment. This position involves a high volume of telephone work, including contact with law enforcement officials and representatives of private and public entities. The work schedule for this position is 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The Job Responsibilities are:
- Taking telephone sworn statements of victims
- Assessing victims’ needs during the pre-file stage
- Providing criminal justice information and emotional support
- Referring victims to community resources
- Taking in-person statements when needed
- Researching and evaluating information found in arrest forms
- Determining elements of crimes and ensuring all relevant case information is complete and available
- Performing other related duties as assigned
The Minimum Requirements are:
- Bachelor’s Degree, or
- Associate Degree and two (2) years of experience working as a Paralegal, Victim Witness Counselor, Case Analyst, or Legal Secretary (Trial Coordinator), or
- Successful completion of a two (2) year Paralegal program and two (2) years’ experience working as a Paralegal, Victim Witness Counselor, Case Analyst, or Legal Secretary (Trial Coordinator), or
- Four (4) years equivalent combination of experience as a Paralegal, Victim Witness Counselor, Case Analyst, or Legal Secretary (Trial Coordinator), or
- Four (4) years secretarial experience of which two (2) years must include case preparation and coordination
The Preferred Qualifications and Skills are:
- Having working knowledge of the criminal justice system and restitution alternatives
- Possessing and demonstrating working knowledge with HYDRA, and Criminal Justice System (CJIS)
- Being fluent (English/Spanish or English/Creole)
