The Opportunity
Reporting to the CEO, the Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) will play a pivotal role in leading our scientific research and development efforts to drive scientific strategy and to shape the pipeline of novel CNS therapies. This role will be responsible for leading the company’s Neuroscience, CMC and MedChem functions. The ideal candidate will possess a unique blend of scientific expertise, leadership acumen, and strategic vision to propel the company to new heights.
Responsibilities
- Scientific Leadership: Provide scientific leadership and strategic oversight to advance discovery and preclinical development agenda, ensuring alignment with the company's goals and objectives.
- Pipeline Development: Lead the identification, evaluation and prioritization of novel therapeutic targets and candidate molecules for neurorestorative therapies.
- Innovation: Develop innovative solutions based on scientific evidence and market insights, driving differentiation and competitive advantage in the marketplace.
- Research Strategy: Develop and implement a comprehensive research strategy to address key scientific questions and challenges related to our therapeutic areas of investigation.
- Clinical Strategy: Provide scientific guidance to clinical development strategies including clinical biomarker development, to ensure close alignment between preclinical research and clinical development.
- Quality Assurance: Collaborate with quality assurance and regulatory affairs functions to establish and maintain high standards of product quality, safety, and compliance with relevant regulations and standards.
- Partnerships and External Collaborations: Build strategic partnerships with academic institutions, research organizations, and industry partners to access external expertise and resources, driving innovation and knowledge exchange.
- Intellectual Property: Identify and protect valuable intellectual property assets through patent filings, technology licensing agreements, and other intellectual property strategies.
- Team Development: Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing scientific team, fostering a culture of continuous learning, collaboration, and innovation.
- Communication and Internal Collaboration: Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment and integration of scientific efforts across the organization.
Requirements
To thrive in this role, you will need to come with:
- PhD or equivalent degree in biomedical sciences, neurology, molecular biology, or related field; MD/PhD preferred.
- Proven track record of scientific leadership and accomplishments in biotechnology, with significant experience in drug discovery and development.
- Expertise in neurorestorative therapies and CNS conditions, such as ALS, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
- Prior experience working at a small to mid-sized biotech company.
- Strong understanding of preclinical and clinical development processes, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
- Demonstrated ability to build and lead high-performing scientific teams, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and accountability.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex scientific concepts and strategy to diverse audiences, including internal stakeholders, external partners, and investors.
- Strategic thinker with a results-oriented mindset, capable of driving projects forward in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
