JOB SUMMARY: Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) seeks a full-time General Internal Medicine faculty member for the new Department of Internal Medicine in Asheville, NC. The General Internal Medicine Faculty member will provide excellent, evidence-based, efficient patient care services, as well as resident and student teaching, mentoring, curriculum planning, and effective supervision. This role will directly care for ambulatory patients in the faculty outpatient practice and supervise the care provided to ambulatory patients by staff in the resident outpatient practice. Opportunities for inpatient care, supervision, and teaching are also available.
The Internal Medicine Faculty member will provide excellent, evidence-based, efficient patient care services, as well as resident and student teaching, mentoring, curriculum planning, and effective supervision.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Directly care for ambulatory patients in the faculty outpatient practice
- Supervise the care provided to ambulatory patients by house staff in the resident outpatient practice
- Improve the quality and efficiency of ambulatory care at MAHEC
- If interested, directly care for hospitalized patients on the general medicine inpatient service working on teams with house staff and students
- Mentor residents in evidence-based medical care
- Participate in and foster scholarship in the ambulatory setting
- Work within MAHEC and with other departments to further the effective management of ambulatory and hospitalized patients
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
- CLINICAL
- Provide direct clinical care to ambulatory patients and hospitalized patients (if interested), with the amount of time spent in the outpatient and inpatient venues determined by mutual agreement with the Department Chair
- Participate in the faculty on-call system, including night and weekend on-call duties (telephone call only; no in-hospital responsibilities)
- Comply in a timely manner with all institutional policies for professional work, including credentialing, documentation, and billing
- Work effectively with other members of the extended inter-professional team
- Additional clinical duties as necessary for emergent situations or as arranged otherwise with the employee.
- TEACHING
- Serve as a faculty advisor and mentor for residents.
- Supervise and teach house staff in the resident outpatient practice
- Promote and participate in education programs of the department (continuing education, resident, student), to include didactics in areas of interest in Internal Medicine
- Serve in an administrative teaching role for CQI team activities and core curriculum lectures for residents.
- Supervise and teach learners (including medical students, interns, and residents) on the inpatient house staff teaching service (if rounding on inpatient teams), if interested
- Conduct daily teaching activities that use contemporary adult learning methods to promote evidence-based practice
- Demonstrate effective teaching skills and continually develop as a teacher for learners at all levels
- Complete required evaluations of learners in a timely manner—including but not limited to written and verbal feedback.
- Participate in other learning activities such as morning report, core conference, and other formal educational programs for undergraduate and post-graduate learners
- RESEARCH
- Participate in clinical and educational research, according to skills, interest, and funding (research opportunities may include performance improvement initiatives or formal extramurally funded investigations)
- Demonstrate commitment to community-based health sciences and research
- ADMINISTRATIVE
- Work with institutional staff and administration to attain the strategic objectives of MAHEC, including patient safety, patient and other customer satisfaction, maintenance and enhancement of public perception, and fiscal health
- Participate, based on experience/skills, on committees and work groups as appropriate within the department and within MAHEC

- COMPUTER
- Experience using Electronic Medical Records preferred

- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, legal documents, or governmental regulations required.

- FOREIGN LANGUAGE
- Spanish speaking skills preferred.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of 3 years clinical practice experience post residency training, or completion of faculty development fellowship preferred
- PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Teaching experience preferred
REQUIRED LICENSES:
- Licensure to practice medicine in North Carolina
- Certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine Practice or is Board Eligible
- Appointment in good standing to the medical staff of Mission
SCHEDULE:
Regular attendance on-site is an essential function of this position. Typical business hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm (or flexed to best meet the needs of the clients and/or the Division); 40 hours per workweek; weekend, holiday, or evening coverage is occasionally required. Work hours will need to be flexible in order to respond to special work assignments, or evening activities, as requested by the team leader.
