Overview
Partners network, source, diligence, and make investments on behalf of In-Q-Tel. Post-investment, Partners advise portfolio companies and represent In-Q-Tel’s interests as a Board Observer. Partners have extensive prior finance, entrepreneurial, operational, and/or startup experience, including venture investing. The ideal candidate brings enthusiasm for In-Q-Tel’s mission, market/technology subject matter expertise with a network to match, a track record of successful investing, prior Board experience, intellectual curiosity, integrity, and a bias for action.
Responsibilities
Deal Sourcing & Relationship Management
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with entrepreneurs, investors, academics, government employees, and other persons to a) generate consistent, high-quality deal flow b) enhance In-Q-Tel subject matter expertise and c) promote the In-Q-Tel brand within the venture ecosystem.
- Synthesize and deliver written and verbal assessments on prospective startup investment opportunities.
- Build and maintain cross-functional relationships across In-Q-Tel in support of pre- and post-investment activities.
- Lead transaction diligence, investment memo preparation, and champion potential investments. Effectively assess and balance perceived investment risks relative to potential strategic impact.
- Negotiate complex investment terms involving equity, technology licensing, and development funding to maximize overall value and return for In-Q-Tel and our stakeholders.
- Coordinate and manage the activities of legal, finance, technology, and administrative resources in carrying out deal and research tasks.
- As a Board Observer, proactively provide support to portfolio companies and Board of Directors across a range of topics, especially those that are unique to public sector sales/go-to-market success.
Market Research & Thought Leadership
- Lead cross-functional teams in conducting quantitative and qualitative market research on specific venture-backed tech sectors and related companies. Synthesize research and findings into high-quality investment theses, presentations, and/or reports.
- Maintain general awareness of venture industry and technology market trends, problems, and opportunities and communicate insights effectively to both internal and external stakeholders.
- Build and maintain expertise in select tech/market areas through rigorous research and networking, including representing In-Q-Tel at industry events and conferences.
- Serve as the primary In-Q-Tel representative in public-facing content/press for respective focus areas and related investments.
Qualifications
- Enthusiasm for In-Q-Tel’s strategic mission.
- Demonstrated passion for emerging technology and the venture capital industry.
- +10 years of relevant experience in VC, investment, entrepreneurial, operating, strategic, and/or other finance roles.
- Extensive VC investment track record and startup board experience in at least one of In-Q-Tel’s technology focus areas.
- Exceptional critical thinking, interpersonal, and written/verbal communication skills.
- Robust network of venture, technology, and industry contacts in respective investment focus areas.
- Strong negotiation skills, comfortable negotiating high-value transactions with minimal oversight.
- Highly motivated self-starter, able to work in unstructured environment without guidance.
