About The Role

This is a full time role reporting to the Corporate Controller. We have a preference for this new team member to join us in a flexible hybrid work environment in one of our offices in San Francisco CA, Portland, OR, Portland, ME or New York, NY. Highly qualified candidates located in other parts of the United States may also be considered.
What You’ll Do
- Support all aspects of our accounting and reporting process, including performing reviews of journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and preparation of the monthly balance sheet and income statement fluctuation analysis and conducting business updates with senior leadership.
- Identify, evaluate and implement finance systems infrastructure and reporting needs to support business growth and drive scalable tools and mechanisms which includes automation of the accounts receivable, accounts payable and revenue recognition processes.
- Prepare the annual financial statement reporting package in compliance with US GAAP.
- Take a lead role in supporting the interim and annual financial statement audit, including management and delivery of the supporting documentation to the audit teams.
- Serve as leader in coordinating all international and domestic tax and compliance related requirements; liaison with external advisor for tax expertise which includes coordination of deliverables to meet compliance requirements.
- Perform review of non-standard, complex contracts and determine accounting treatment. Create accounting memorandums to memorialize the accounting position and conclusions reached.
- Conduct research on accounting literature pertaining to new business initiatives, complex contracts and/or transactions. Significant accounting transactions include complex revenue (ASC 606), derivative and mark-to-market accounting.
- Develop internal controls framework pertaining to newly implemented system, NetSuite. Develop more robust internal controls to address areas of control weakness.
- Serve as a versatile and collaborative senior team member, support and be a resource for teammates as needed.
- Compile and review financial statements for accuracy and legal compliance.
- Identify areas of inefficiency in work papers and processes and implement process improvements.
About You
You have demonstrated success as an accounting professional and people manager with several years of progressive accounting and audit experience. You are able to accurately maintain a general ledger and ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). In addition, you are highly focused on precision, have excellent communication, organizational, and analytical skills, and are excited to bring your expertise to a Benefit Corporation focused on helping businesses take urgent action on climate change.
Candidates with the following qualifications will be well aligned for this role:
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience; including working for a global company
- 3-5 years of audit experience and a demonstrated ability to produce and review audit-ready workpapers
- Extensive knowledge of GAAP and relevant accounting standards
- CPA or equivalent preferred
- High proficiency with NetSuite preferred, and/or cloud-based accounting software (i.e., Expensify, Adaptive or similar)
- Experience working with international currency desired
- Advanced Excel/G-Sheet skills
- Superb verbal and written communication skills
- Strong numeracy and analytical skills
- Excellent problem-solving and time management skills
- Highly organized and detail-oriented
- Interest in renewable energy helpful
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience in accounting or finance required
How We Define Success
Within the First 30 Days:
- Gain a comprehensive understanding of current month-end close procedures and general workload management
- Familiarize yourself with team dynamics, including roles, responsibilities, and communication channels
- Acquire knowledge of accounting systems, resources, and inputs essential for daily accounting operations
- Initiate building strong cross-functional relationships with operational team members
- Begin to develop relationships with operational team leads, fostering an environment of continuous improvement and collaboration
Within the First 90 Days:
- Identify areas for process enhancement and initiate improvements in collaboration with relevant stakeholders
- Lead the coordination and completion of the close process
- Serve as the primary point of contact for Accounts Payable (AP) and Accounts Receivable (AR) matters
- Establish yourself as a trusted colleague in facilitating seamless communication between departments
Within 6 Months:
- Confidently and effectively lead the day-to-day workflow for the staff and senior accountant team
- Develop and recommend strategic plans that align with the company's goals
- Demonstrate proficiency in managing the team while ensuring efficiency, accuracy, and compliance
- Showcase leadership in guiding the team through the day-to-day challenges and opportunities
Within 1 Year:
- Successfully integrate new customers and new business into the accounting process
- Drive and oversee the annual auditing process (US and Internationally) with precision and thoroughness
- Continuously contribute to the enhancement of financial processes, ensuring alignment with industry best practices
- Showcase a clear impact on the team's performance through metrics such as accuracy, timeliness, and overall operational excellence
Compensation & Benefits
- Compensation: The starting base pay for this position is $99,930 to $135,200 in the US. The total compensation package for the successful candidate in this role may exceed the base pay as it includes other incentive pay. The base pay is dependent upon many factors such as location, transferable or job-related skills, work experience, relevant training, business needs, and market demands. The base salary range is subject to change and may be modified in the future

- Supplemental Pay: this position is eligible for discretionary bonus programs including the company’s profit-sharing program and an annual performance bonus based on personal, department and company goals
