Duties

Major Duties include but are not limited to:

Serves as the pest controller responsible for the control of invasive plants, invasive animals, plant diseases and pest invertebrates in natural areas. Develops and implements chemical and manual techniques and determines optimum control schedule to effectively manage target species.
Safely handles, applies, maintains and stores chemicals, tools, machinery and equipment in compliance with OSHA, EPA, NPS and all applicable federal state and local laws, regulations, and policies.
Trains and mentors lower-grade WG pest control workers and helpers in mixing and applying pesticides. Plans and assigns work sequences.
Monitors and records treatment activities in the field; summarizes treatments and efficacy for reports. Consults with Federal, State and local subject matter experts and applies principles of Integrated Pest Management in control of target species.

Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
You must have the ability to lift 50 pounds.
You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
If you are a new employee in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
You will be required to complete a one-year trial period.
You may be required to travel overnight away from home occasionally. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
Ability to lift 50 pounds as a Condition of Employment.
Applicants must be at least (1) 18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

You must possess a State of Hawaii Certificate for Commercial Applicators of Restricted Pesticides (Category 2 - Forest Pest Control), by the closing date of this announcement. Failure to possess and provide this certificate will result in your being determined ineligible.

A Recruitment Incentive May Be Authorized for a newly selected employee when appointed to a permanent, temporary, or term position. A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.

Physical Demands: The work requires moderate to heavy physical effort such as lifting and carrying chemical solutions and equipment, often weighing 50 pounds or more. The job requires working outdoors, walking/hiking cross country in remote backcountry, and in all kinds of weather conditions, including extreme heat and humidity. The duties require considerable and often strenuous physical exertion such as bending, stretching, pulling, stooping, kneeling, climbing, standing, walking, and hiking in difficult terrain. While working in certain situations, incumbent may be required to wear protective clothing that may be hot, uncomfortable, and burdensome. The risk of heat-related illness is significant.

Working Conditions: The work is indoor and outside. Work is performed in a variety of habitat types, elevations, and conditions. Terrain ranges from flat to steep, rocky, or where vegetation is sparse or dense. Work is occasionally performed in bad weather and often in extreme temperatures. The worker applies pesticides while wearing respirators, gloves, and other personal protective equipment designed to nullify the risk of exposure to toxic dust and sprays which might damage their health. They may be exposed to poisonous insects, reptiles, and plants, and to wild, dead, decaying, or sick animals. Work requires travelling by four-wheel drive over primitive roads and rough terrain; working in a full range of weather conditions in remote backcountry; operating power tools with sharp and fast-moving parts with loud motors. Indoor work is performed at a computer for up to several hours at a time.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.

How You Will Be Evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above. Documentation for Interagency/Career Transition Assistance Plan consideration if you are a displaced Federal employee within the local commuting area.
