A Brief Overview

The Associate Chief Nursing Officer has responsibility and accountability for establishing and maintaining excellence in nursing practice and effectiveness and efficiency of nursing operations within their defined areas of responsibility. This position serves as a facilitator of collaborative professional relationships between and among medical staff, academic programs, corporate programs, and hospital operations for the purpose of creating a healing and supportive environment for patients and staff. The position models the values, acts in accordance with nursing policies and procedures and holds others accountable for meeting standards which may be informed by industry best practices or may be regulatory in nature. This position provides leadership for advancing, developing, refining, and innovating nursing clinical delivery operations throughout Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley.

The ACNO will have responsibility over nursing practices and alignment across all Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley areas: Nursing Supervisors, Nursing Office, Float Pool, Outpatient Clinics, ICU, ER/UC, Med/Surg, Stroke and Respiratory.

What you will do

STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP:
Actively engage in the development and implementation of the strategic plan for Nursing, aligned with the strategic plan for Stanford Health Care.
Determine opportunities to improve the value of care and services to patients and families.
Identify and support community outreach, philanthropy and marketing initiatives that may enhance the development of new business or research opportunities.
Actively provide nursing operational consultation and engagement at an institutional level for the Service Line/Groupings for the organization.
INSPIRATIONAL LEADERSHIP:
Provide vision, direction, and leadership to the departments of nursing.
Work collaboratively across organizational lines to facilitate hospital and nursing operations and ensure patient needs are met.
Act as a change agent and manage organizational change efforts to ensure operational effectiveness.
OPERATIONAL LEADERSHIP:
Lead program planning, implementation, and evaluation efforts for areas of responsibility both at a strategic and tactical level.
Ensure ongoing personal development plan and provide management development and coaching for other members of the nursing team.
Represent the medical center at state, local, and national levels through involvement in professional associations and organizations.
Accountable for ensuring exceptional patient experience through patient-centered initiatives and high levels of customer services.
Facilitate the development and implementation of evidence-based practice and quality efforts.
Maintain an environment that promotes patient safety, high reliability of processes and quality outcomes.
Participate in and comply with ongoing regulatory and accreditation readiness sustaining a working understanding of regulatory requirements and accreditation standards. Ensure areas of responsibility consistently meet these standards.
Develop and oversee departmental budgets and assure financial accountability for annual operations and capital expenditures and budgets.
Assure efficiencies in staffing and resource utilization by comparison with internal and external benchmarks as measured by productivity and cost per unit.
PEOPLE LEADERSHIP:
Assure the availability of appropriately trained staff to deliver a high-quality, consistent standard of nursing care.
Develop and implement staffing patterns to meet demands consistent with a fluctuating volume and acuity.
Cultivate a culture that promotes and rewards professional growth, interdisciplinary collaboration, constructive communication, flexibility, teamwork, and customer service.
Maintain consistency in the employee performance appraisal process utilizing established standards of practice. Maintain a focus on internal talent management and retention.
Promote positive service relationships with patients/families, physicians, labor unions and staff throughout Stanford Health Care.
FUNCTIONAL LEADERSHIP:
Promote clinical programs both internally and externally.
Participate in educational programs.
Provide opportunities for staff development based on scientific advances, changes in technology, society, or health care delivery systems.
Take an active role in the integration of operations between the school of medicine and nursing services.
CULTURAL LEADERSHIP:
Model the mission vision and values of Nursing.
Consistently display and hold others accountable for displaying the professional service behaviors.

Education Qualifications

Master's Degree in a work-related discipline/field from an accredited college or university required.
Doctorate in Nursing Preferred.

Experience Qualifications

Broad extensive related work experience and progressively responsible in administrative and/or managerial positions Required.
3+ years to 5 years of Director level experience Preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to plan, prioritize, direct, manage, evaluate, and set standards for nursing function/program using a system thinking approach, manage projects and change processes, and effectively and appropriately allocate resources at the care delivery level.
Ability to provide leadership and influence others.
Ability to supervise, coach, mentor, train, and evaluate work results.
Knowledge of laws, rules, and regulations; standards and guidelines of certifying and accrediting bodies; hospital and department/unit standards, protocols, policies and procedures governing the provision of nursing care.
Knowledge of leadership and management skills essential to the practice of nursing, principles, and practices of and current trends in health care delivery and hospital system organization and administration.
Knowledge of principles and practices of organization, administration, fiscal and personnel management.
Knowledge of current standards, theories, principles, practices, and emerging technology issues to the nursing profession.
Ensure the integration of service line planning into nursing resource management strategic planning and operational budgets.
Promote the development and implementation of inter- and intra-disciplinary research by staff and faculty.
Contribute to the advancement of nursing through professional research and scholarly activities.
NEA-BC Certification within 1 year.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

National certification in nursing administration or advanced nursing administration required within 4 years for an incumbent Associate Chief Nursing Officer assuming position, and within 2 years of a newly hired Associate Chief Nursing Officer assuming position.
Strong communication, presentation, leadership, analytical and problem-solving skills required.
Ability to lead and manage through influence and change.
Thorough knowledge of federal and California State laws and regulations such as: Knox-Keene Act, Federal HMO Act, TJC, and all applicable Medicare and Medi-Cal regulations.
Significant leadership experience in regulatory surveys.
Demonstrated ability to achieve results in a union environment.
Proven ability to deliver results for meeting organizational objectives.
Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.

Licenses and Certifications

CA-RN (Registered Nurse) required.
National specialty certification (e.g., CPHQ, CCDS, NEA-BC, CENP) preferred required within 1 Year.

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $97.00 - $130.00 per hour.

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
