POSITION SUMMARY:

The role of the anesthesia technician is to assist the licensed anesthesia care providers in the acquisition, preparation, and application of equipment and supplies required for the safe, efficient and cost effective administration of anesthesia in any area of the hospital where anesthesia services are rendered.

POSITION EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS:

High School diploma or G.E.D. required
BLS certification required
Current Texas C.N.A license preferred
Must be able to be sensitive to cultural and bilingual issues.
Good written and verbal communication skills required.
Ability to read, write and speak English
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with all levels of nursing, administration, and physicians
Prefer hospital experience

JOB KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:

6 months – 1-year continuous experience in operative nursing and as an anesthesia technician is preferred.
Able to adjust and/or troubleshoot monitoring equipment, and computer equipment.
Must be able to interact and communicate with all levels of staff, physicians, patients, and families in an effective manner. Exhibits tact, enthusiasm, and patience.
Must be sensitive to cultural and bilingual issues.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Promotes the facility mission, vision and values by effectively communicating them to others. Considers mission, vision and values in developing services, standards and practices.
Sets up anesthesia equipment used to monitor.
Sets up monitoring equipment in the operating room, including electrocardiograph (ECG) and temperature cables, hyper/hypothermia blanket, pressure manifolds, recorders, defibrillators, and the patient monitoring system.
During surgical procedures, assists in the insertion of arterial pressure lines.
Cleans all non-disposable equipment after each procedure and performs daily maintenance checks. Stocks equipment.
Attends classes as directed, including ECG classes to develop ECG interpretive skills used during procedures.
Provides general assistance to the Anesthesiologist and other technicians including, but not limited to, intubation and starting of lines. Provides assistance to co-workers as needed. Performs other related tasks and projects as assigned.
Collaborates with surgery team leader to determine surgical suites, anesthesiologists, number of scheduled cases, and types of anesthesia to be administered from daily surgical schedule.
Moves anesthesia equipment to proper surgical suite; checks equipment to verify proper connections, gasses turned off, etc.
Maintains adequate supply of proper equipment such as needles, syringes, air-ways, ET tubes, scopes and blades, stethoscope, blood pressure cuff and other necessary items in anesthesia carts.
Maintains supplies and equipment according to usage, PAR levels and maintenance schedules.
Consistently prepares appropriate anesthesia supplies and equipment for cases; responds to emergency situations promptly and appropriately.
Demonstrates consideration and knowledge of age-specific issues related to meeting the needs of patients of all ages from birth to geriatrics.
Completes annual age-specific competency study module and examination.
Identifies and documents equipment problems; replaces defective equipment as able; notifies appropriate persons if equipment is not replaceable and/or affects the availability/capability of an OR suite.
Maintains anesthesia workroom, supplies and equipment in a clean, orderly, organized manner.
Basic understanding of physiological functions and processes as they relate to issues of patient care.
Keeps training current in use of new medical technologies.

Builds trust and is patient and responsive to client's needs.
Pays attention to detail. Approaches work in a meticulous and thorough manner.

B. Working Conditions: The individual spends over 95% of his/her time in an air-conditioned environment with varying exposures to noise. There is protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. The position does have low exposure to malodorous, infectious body fluids from patients and some minimal exposure to noxious smells from cleansing agents.

C. Occupational Exposure: This position has minimal to no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues and is an OSHA Category III (although situations can be imagined or hypothesized under which anyone, anywhere, might encounter potential exposure to body fluids). Person who performs these duties are not called upon as part of their employment to perform or assist in emergency medical care or first aid or to be potentially exposed in some other way.
