Job Summary:

Responsible for providing leadership, mentorship and acting as a role model in acute care nursing departments. Supervising and managing the day to day running of the units; a resource to staff, physicians and ancillary departments. This position reports directly to the Nursing Director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Leads daily operations for the nursing departments ensuring staff needs are met in order to provide safe, quality patient care; provides leadership and direction to staff.
Supervises, trains and evaluates nursing staff.
Manages nursing schedule; receives any sick calls and arranges for coverage while on duty.
Investigates patient complaints and acts as a patient advocate, investigating as necessary.
Participates in team interviews and hiring processes; assigns preceptors to new staff; assists with initial on-boarding and orientation of new staff.
Maintains department inventory to ensure availability of supplies.
Collaborates with staff, physicians and Director on staff and patient care issues to ensure safe, quality care.
Acts as a resource to department; provides direct patient care when necessary; assists Charge Nurse in assigning lunch breaks to ensure staff have adequate downtime during their shift.
Manages staff allocations according to census fluctuations according to guidelines.
Communicates and works closely with Director and House Supervisors, ensuring necessary information is passed on and decisions are made collaboratively.
Assists with data collection, chart reviews and Quality initiatives as assigned.
Attends meetings as delegated by the Director; gives constructive input and suggestions at staff meetings.
Acts as the first line in the Chain of Command structure for the department; communicates with Director and House Supervisors on issues and decisions made.
Ensures Time Cards are completed accurately and timely for unit.
Serves as a facilitator among department.
Ensures excellence in clinical nursing practice and delivery of patient care, providing education and resources when necessary.
Assures compliance with applicable requirements and standards.
Acts as a positive Change Agent when promoting new processes, encouraging staff to keep positive attitudes.
Provides disciplinary guidance and actions to staff; communicates all issues with the Director.
Participates in the necessary periodic evaluation of staff performance.

Maintains knowledge of regulatory agencies.
Demonstrates the willingness to research and obtain knowledge for the performance of the position.
Basic computer skills.

Information Management: Treats all information and data within the scope of the position with appropriate confidentiality and security.

MINIMUM POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Graduate from an accredited school of nursing. BSN Preferred.
Work Experience: One year of nursing experience in a leadership role.
Training: N/A
License/Certification: Current New Mexico Nurse License; BLS, ACLS, PALS required.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Work environment consists of daily patient contact, which may include exposure to blood, or other body fluids.
